Zilean Passive Discussion

Hello everyone! I love playing Zilean in the support role and occasionally mid lane. Ever since Riot updated him they have slowly changed aspects to put him in a good spot in terms of his power and usability. The only sore spot (for me personally) is his passive.

Its true that there are some times when you can use his passive to great effect to give your teammate a power spike such as hitting level 6 in lane before your opponent; however more often than not I feel that it is underwhelming. Most of the time when you use his passive you are simply topping off a teammates xp bar, and they were going to level after another minion or two anyway. Sometimes, if you save up your xp, you can completely level someone from 0 xp to the next level, but in my experience that happens once, MAYBE twice per game.

I just got done playing a game as support Zilean and I had an idea about some way to give Zilean a more exciting effect to his passive that rewards him for focusing his xp boosting powers on one ally over the course of the game.

What if, once per game when both Zilean and his selected teammate are level 18, he could grant them knowledge of a future (to keep the concept lore friendly) in which his teammate is even more powerful? What I'm thinking is one of two things. Either he grants his teammate one extra level up, so there would be 1 level 19 player on his team, OR he would grant 1 player the ability to rank up their ultimate to level 4.

A level 4 ultimate would level up the same as the previous 3 levels in the sense that it would increase its power by the same amount. Aside from some fringe cases that I cannot think of right now, I don't feel like this would break many (if any) champions. Please feel free to correct me in the comments.

What do you all think? I feel that this would be rewarding for Zilean because it incentivizes attempting to boost a player to 18 as quickly as possible while also giving him a neat passive at level 18 whereas at the moment he has nothing.

(I apologize if there are any weird spaces between words/letters in this post, keyboard is on the fritz and is double/triple/quadruple hitting some keys.)

Sounds cool but it kind of could break some ultimates, a lot of which have manually set values that are made to be balanced. For example karthus ult base damage is:

MAGIC DAMAGE: 250 / 400 / 550 (+ 60% AP)

Assuming this only increases the base damage as per the final level up it would make it 150 boost which would be 700 damage... this + the items and the burn effects would be crazy good.

The cooldown, which goes as follows: COOLDOWN: 200 / 180 / 160 would drop down to 140 which if someone were to build full cdr with would take it down to 84... incredibly strong.

diana min cooldown would drop from 8.25 to 6

These are just a few of the champions I play that I know how to break immediately.

This isn't to say its impossible to balance, but it would be really hard to make something like this on a large scale because you would have to take every champion and balance it for each properly which would take far too much time.

Also some ultimates aren't normal like udyr and elise.

TL;DR great idea, too hard to implement.

I appreciate the reply! Karthus was actually one of the few that I thought of when I was deciding if it would break champions. For him in particular based on what you have posted you can think of the Zilean boost to be 150 base onto whatever a lvl 18 full build Karthus would already be doing. Keep in mind that Zilean would only be able to do this to one of his teammates and they MUST both be level 18. I personally don't see (in this example) 150 base damage boost to one champion, for going through most of the match with a low impact passive, to be something that would break the game. The cool down change is strong, and I can see how the 40% cdr Karthus could be an issue; however even then Karthus would have to be giving up damage to get to the cdr cap.

At least for Karthus personally I don't see how it would break him, but I do see your point. The Diana example does not seem to be a breaking point either really as functionally the difference between 8 and 6 seconds on a skill that auto refreshes if used properly is not a big difference. Again though these are my opinions. I definitely think that my idea is rough and could be balanced if looked at in more detail.

Regardless of what you or I consider breaking points, I'm hoping to get more discussion going! Even if my idea turns out to be something that either would never be implemented or too difficult to implement, I think we can all agree that Zilean's passive either needs more oomf or a complete overhaul.
