So he can swap to his shadow to position himself behind his target for better chase.
Now Riot just give him the damn purpose of the old ult by place him behind is target instantly and give him a bloody escape. What's the reason for this ? His ult with escape used to place him in front of his target too.
The Ult change made it so getting triple Shadow damage was much harder, but in exchange gave him one of the most absurd escape tools in the game.
A majority of Zeds at the time went ahead and used their W behind them for the exact same result, so they just streamlined it.
No idea what was their reasoning for this, as he didn't really need that change which made him one of the safest Assassins around.
What's funny is that I remember that people were crying this was a MAJOR nerf when it came through.
The majority of players across the entire world knows Zed is OP right now.
Before Zed became popular I actually would use W behind me preemptively if I knew I could kill the target and get out before shit hit the fan.
But there was much more options to Zed's Shadow placement when his ult placed the shadow behind his target.
