@Riot do you actively discourage morde from building spellvamp

I noticed morde's Q still procs spellvamp at 1/3 rate when it is indeed a single target spell. Did you forget to change that since his pre-rework Q was aoe or did you guys do this to discourage people from building spellvamp on morde?

ADC can heal even up to 250 hp per AA, attacking 1,3x or faster per second.

But mages? Nope, can't have that.

250 is assuming you can crit constantly without fail

Saianna20 votes

item 3031 + item 3085 = 50% crit, lifesteal works on additional targets, deals 250% crit instead 200%. Now all you need is some lifesteal. Preferably item 3072 or item 3812

And mages?

item 3152 . That's all folks, 1 item. You stack AP like crazy just to learn most of your spells get only 1/3 of 15% spellvamp (which is 5% per dmg) because of AOE coding. No synergy between items (like IE -> bigger crit -> more life steal).

Yes I know you could hit your AOE on whole enemy team, having potentially 25% lifesteal. Or versus 7 minions + a champion (40%), but all depends on luck, timing and champion you play.

And then what about better CDR choices? AP choices? Mana regen? You waste resources to gain HP, whilist ADC get health for free. And lets not even talk about how easy it is to get life steal...

Any major AD item has life steal slapped on it. #WHY? Why ADC have to have so easy life. MR + AD + Shield + life steal AD + Lifesteal + dmg mitigation AD + Lifesteal + shield AS + AD + Lifesteal + %current hp + active %hp Lifesteal + Lifesteal

Everything for ADs is so overloaded that I don't even know if Yasuo is main offender with overloaded stuff anymore..

Ok, I calmed down.. Point is, Riot made this game as ADC friendly as possible. And now I've read somewhere that mage update will bring only minor changes. No new items for mages. This is laughable. Fantasy game where playing mages is actually punishing.

RoodToob2 votes

not gonna agree or disagree, thats riots job, i do have to say though that item 3146 is not a bad AP item, its still 80 ap, people just think its crap due to the AD, granted its not amazing, it still is spell vamp

Ok other thing is

{quoted}

Well thats just not true

Saianna5 votes

I don't mind item 3146 having some AD, if not for it's price (3400). And then this passive works with AD too (unless description is unclear), thus it's true-hybrid item.

Well thats just not true

item 3812 15% lifesteal from all physical dmg (5% for AOE) item 3072 20% lifesteal item 3153 10% lifesteal item 3031 even though it doesn't have lifesteal, it synergises with it. item 3156 10% lifesteal in passive shield item 3508 builds from item 1053 so even when rushing you'll stil have 10% lifesteal. My bad Even item 1055 has (3%) lifesteal.. Didn't this item 3137 used to have some lifesteal too? item 3139 10% lifesteal item 3144 10% lifesteal for midgame Ah and ADC could get item 3146 for 15% lifesteal from all sources cause why not :|

Ofc there are more AD items that ADCs need to build, but most of the usefull ones do in fact have life steal.

While mages could get potentially item 3152 + item 3146, but stat wise it's suicide. Some AP with no mana regen and 10% CDR..

RoodToob7 votes

item 3508 doesn't build out of Vamp anymore, no more lifesteal

item 3137 isn't on summoners rift, also no life steal

Saying item 3031 synegizes with life steal is saying item 3089 synergies with AP.

item 3156's life steal requires you to be low, but yea i guess its got it

item 3142 item 3078 item 3147 item 3036/item 3033 item 3004 all dont have life steal

So adcs have 4(might be wrong, plz correct me if so) items with life steal. We also didn't mention Crit items such as item 3087 and how they are necessary to a build too.

Anyway I'm not trying to say AD itemization is crap. It definitely isn't. Just wanted to point out the life steal thingy.

And i thought AD had more life steal because (in general) they are closer to a fight then mages. Most mages who are close range have some healing Cassiopeia Vladimir Ahri Morgana and others have shields too

item 3139 = meant this item..

item 3156 = i have seen LOTS of ADCs surviving because of this sudden steroid.

item 3089 well, true.. I guess..

Those items, youmu, 3force, duskblade, etc are all important, yes but the fact that ADC has 2 early game and 6 lategame choices for Lifesteal means something.

Anyway I'm not trying to say AD itemization is crap. It definitely isn't. Just wanted to point out the life steal thingy.

Imo it has never been better. There was never more options for ADCs to reach 300 AD and other usefull stats. I'm just annoyed that lifesteal is a given for ADC, while mages have to sacrifice alot to obtain spellvamp stat that's already worse than lifesteal.

And i thought AD had more life steal because (in general) they are closer to a fight then

Imo it's caused of powercreep, where every next champion has to be better than old one, or items have to be shinier than before.

Only Vlad/Akali and maybe Morgana are worth to buy spellvamp on. Cassiopeia will be reworked soon'ish, Ahris spellvamp has fixed numbers

And those shields.. Well.. Yeah.. But can we really compare 2 (3 with item 3053 ) passive shields with ability-shields? It isn't that fair imo.

this part contains alot of salt and hate towards ADC, you don't have to read it. I wrote it to just throw it out from me :)

I'll tell you about my experience versus ADCs:

I was Talon in yesterdays game. I'm rather bad Talon, Know only the most basic combo E-Q-R-W-Hydra + Thunderlords + sheen (if i manage to get it). This combo heavily damaged my main target which was Kallista. But she survived with about 1/10th HP. From that she started to just AA me in 1 spot, going 1v1 manly mode. She outhealed my damage. She outhealed my lifesteal from Hydra.

In older game I was playing as Xin. 300 armor (about 200 bonus) with thornmail and 3k hp. Enemy Draven was critting me for 450-500 and healing for 200~, while thornmail dealth about 30-40 dmg to him in return. Couldn't do jack shit. For him to heal back 1->100 took 2-3 minions.

And even older game (like 2 weeks ago) enemy Graves was the king of the game. I think I was either tank Garen or Nautilius. If you come in close you get critted because pellets, when he crits you just see his HP bar shot up totally negating all of your damage.

In different game Kindred was shredding our team while healing like mad. It was quite funn because ONCE we dropped her below 50% hp (sudden gank), she used her ultimate and then.. She outhealed us leaving her ultimate with 100% hp while getting double kill. I was Teemo i think.

Anyways, whenever I happen to stumble against good ADC players, the game never feels as unbalanced and pathetic. And it's because that they are allowed to outsustain anything and anyone, even when it's 3vADC, if they play smart they'll win. What can mage do? use his spell rotation, use Zhyona and then get butchered because his dmg comes from spells which are on CD..

Cant forget about Warlords bloodlust mastery either now [slayer-jinx-wink]

Imo it's caused of powercreep, where every next champion has to be better than old one, or items have to be shinier than before.

IDK about shinier items, but at this point they kinda have to make super different champions so they are unique and all have a reason to be picked, its also why we got stuff like the marksman update.

Battlecast Sona6 votes

AD have 5 items (all of which have stats catered to their class) with lifesteal: item 3139 item 3812 item 3072 item 3156 item 3153

AP have 2 items (1 of which is a hybrid item, the other being the only pure AP items): item 3152 item 3146

But now let's look at something... Both AP items basically JUST provide spellvamp (gunblade has AD which is useless for most casters, active which isn't bad... WotA has 10% CDR and AP of course)

Then we have the AD choices...

item 3139 provides both lifesteal, damage, AND a cleanse.

item 3156 provides flat ArPen, MR, AD, + a shield for magic damage and lifesteal at low health.

item 3072 allows you to overheal, giving you an additional shield to soak damage before dying.

item 3153 gives you %HP physical damage, aspd, lifesteal, damage, and the active!

item 3812 makes you take less damage, has AD, regen ALL physical damage, and has 10% CDR

(you could also note that Gunblade is really for both classes, but I definitely think you need AP due to the higher AP and lower AD stats on Gunblade).

What's the major difference? Every single one of the ADC items with lifesteal on them has some form of survivability or defensive use outside of JUST having lifesteal. BotRK is the only one that's less obviously defensive, but stealing someone's MS can make it much easier to kite them.

Meanwhile, mages have literally no defensive item that also give spellvamp. None. Nada. Zilch.

And while your idea of "ADCs are closer to the fight than mages" is kind of true, it's also kind of not. Sure it used to be the truth when mages like Karthus and Veigar were popular - Karthus being someone who wants to be at max range at all times and Veigar standing back until he can land a combo. But now that the game has evolved, mages NEED to be able to option select into spellvamp, and it really NEEDS to be a viable way to get health back. Playing midlane against stuff like Jayce with TP is literally torture for any mage, because if you beat him he can just buy a vamp scepter... Sustain in lane until he can't anymore and TP back, there's basically no appropriate response from the mid laner unless you manage to kill him. You can't possibly keep up with the sustain, unless you also took TP you can't back as freely, and you have 0 itemization options that will fix the problem unless, again, you get strong enough to just oneshot him. It removes a lot of the impetus from players in advantageous matchups to even play, as an AD vs AP with the advantage for the AD is much, much harder to play against than the reverse.

Either AD champs need to lose some of those defensive lifesteal items, or mages need some defensive spellvamp items. AND LET'S REWORK SPELLVAMP SO IT'S NOT THE SAME AS IT WAS IN SEASON 1 GUISE

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

I would argue that Hexdrinker isnt catered to their class. ADCs dont really care about 10 armorpen, and 55 AD is a bit lackluster for an item with no crit chance.

ADCs get it to survive, since surviving is the best way to put out damage. Getting it because its a strong item doesnt mean its catered to their class. Remember when ADCs would get Black Cleaver or Yommus? Same concept.

I think we all know how broken this stat can be when you get 600+ AP and your all abilities are single target and you're an assassin mage with low CDs + a passive that offers Spell Vamp and Lifesteal. Akali

Also, you can't exactly make a point about IE synergizing well with lifesteal and not giving the same treament to AP itemization. Spell Vamp's potency is increased based on how much AP you have and it is unmitigated by Magic Resist since it counts a % raw damage dealt with your abilities and converts it into instant health. There are also champions who deal critical damage with spells:

  • Anivia when applying a slow and using E on a target.
  • Karthus when using his Q on a isolated target.

You've also Included a Cutlass, BorK and Gunblade, which build out of it, so i guess i'll penalize you for that as well.

##Food for thought

I guess ADCs can build a Gunblade so MF is a prime candidate, on top of a Bloodthirster. Thanks for the idea.

And you're absolutely correct. Spell Vamp is very limited for mages, as most of them are prime candidates for WotA and not a Gunblade. Gunblade is more suited for Jax and Akali, so it's very limited too. Except WotA offers just Spell Vamp (we'll disregard 80 AP because every finished AP item gives on average the same amount) and 10% CDR which can easily be replaced with another item - like a Morello , Lucidity or Frost Queen's. Basically, it offers stats that mages can use but also lacks the stats that mages will need to use more of - 10% more CDR and no mana/MP5.

I won't ask Riot o make it available on more items, i prefer that it remains a stat to choose from among others but at least WotA getting buffed, becomming an attractive option for all mages or mages who will need to scrap with others a lot. Katarina Diana

Tbh when I think about this.. How would you fix issue of Vlad/Akali abusing Spell Vamp? I can think of:

  1. Making it Heal over Time
  2. Maxing amount you can heal per x seconds
  3. making it as charged item (statikk style)
  4. Active with cooldown?
  5. Passive triggering below x% hp?

Maybe Rioters are smarter than me and there are 6. 7. 8... 99. ways of making spellvamp better for all, but no matter what option they'll choose the outcome will be:

a. it will still be alot weaker than Life Steal b. Mages will still have 1 option for Spell Vamp c. It'll be rather worthless in teamfights d. 1 side will be better with this item AOE-Single target

Also I believe item will receive useless stats. AP is a given, but Rioters will try their best to rework WotA into the same neutral item for mostly resourceless champs.

nfzeta1 votes

I think we all know how broken this stat can be when you get 600+ AP and your all abilities are single target and you're an assassin mage with low CDs + a passive that offers Spell Vamp and Lifesteal.

This is exactly why i think the item needs to be changed. When you think about it, it would actually make more sense at this point in LoL's life to have spell vamp work more for aoe and dot and not single target.

Most of the single target mages just blow up people and giving them something with 80 ap which also lets them regen a bunch of that high burst just makes things worse (see brofresco's annie spell vamp video, may not be viable normally but its still ridiculous) but its also not needed because people just build more useful high dmg ap items on them. Same goes for champs like Akali who can one shot. Spell vamp should be a staple for kite or dot mages to actually allow them to be played other than assassin like mages. Its partially why ahri was so unbalanced after wota fell off as she had/has a kite mage's kit but dmg (especially true dmg) and mobility beyond what should have been acceptable with the items of the time. Also its really the kite and dot champions who build tankier or with more cdr and therefore would be better synergy with wota. Its no longer a broken thing with the changes to the meta so i say do it, especially with the upcoming mage changes.

Elikain1 votes

I don't agree with limiting the stat to a certain type of damage dealers. It's intuitive to understand why AP items won't be a good buy on Darius (for example) but if you want to build AD and focus on Lifesteal and he's excluded because he isn't much of an AA type champion (and we'll say Lifesteal is also limited to just AA champion types like Marksmen) - how do you convey this limitation to players? It isn't a part of his kit, it's an artificially implemented limitation. It would be confusing and a bad design.

What i propose is: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/cQ00vzAQ-riot-do-you-actively-discourage-morde-from-building-spellvamp?comment=0001000200000000

nfzeta1 votes

Its not limiting it but rather swapping its current state, where aoe and dot vamps less to single target vamping less. Also the item cdr needs to be upgraded to 20% or at least 15% Also your suggestion while not a bad idea on its own defeats the point of spell vamp. Its to make you the person building it have more sustain and regen in lane and fights allowing for more rotations of skill while sticking in the fight, or better 1v1 in an extended fight where you can still do something later.

the problem is, every time spellvamp gets a little out of line vlad just destroys things. a long time ago they had to rework spellvamp to be a unique passive because ppl were building 2 hextech revolvers on vlad and wrecking the midgame

Saianna1 votes

I know it, I was there :/

I've heard that Riot plans to change how spellvamp works (most likely with mage update). Also some Rioters mentioned Vlad getting some small rework to "free" spellvamp from his grip. I could be wrong though.

This whole shitstorm I've made has 3 reasons behind:

  1. Help me vent some frustration away caused by unfair balance leaning towards general direction of ADCs
  2. Inform Riot that some of us still remember what Spell Vamp is
  3. Rise social awareness that Spell Vamp could be your new best friend while fighting Waves of Zeds
forresto2 votes

I think pretty much anything riot does to spellvamp at this point will have to come with some kind of change to vlad. The problem with spellvamp right now I think is that vlad is the hair thin razor upon which spellvamp items are balanced, and no one else can keep up.

yeah, and it gives him 80 damage and a cleanse.

Meanwhile I'm over with my WotA and 10% CDR with my thumb up my ass because Riot loves giving ADCs more defensive, survivability items (but not mages, apparently).

Mages have lots of survivability items. item 3001 item 3151 item 3027 item 3116 item 3040 item 3157 item 3174 all have defensive stats or abilities on them, and that's not even counting rarely built stuff like item 3060.

What they don't have is spellvamp specifically, because Riot has found it to be a problematic way to help mages survive (basically it's way too good on people like Vlad, and not that useful at all on people who will just run out of mana anyway). It's possible that one reason Akali is so badly nerfed is that she works too well with item 3146 and Riot is afraid of her getting out of control.

Until recently ADCs had few choices for survivability other than lifesteal, which is very little help when being 100-0'd by an unpeeled burst mage or assassin (their intended counter classes) and no help at all when hard CC'd. Having them get a bit too much benefit out of item 3053 item 3156 in otherwise offense-focused builds is what makes lifesteal too good; if you can't burst them down and you can't beat them in a long fight where they can lifesteal, then you can't beat them at all (or only with ignite available, which is rare in a double TP meta).

That's why I think those two items should be rebalanced to work better as the offensive part of a mostly defensive item build on someone like DrMundo Illaoi Darius Garen Malphite (juggernauts or tanky initiators) than as the one defensive item in an otherwise glass cannon build. And judging from recent and PBE balance changes, Riot agrees.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

Let's look at something though.

You've got item 3040 ... The closest equivalent is the ADC item 3072 as far as the shield... And the BT shield has NO COOLDOWN and refills with lifesteal while Seraph's Embrace has to be stacked to 750 mana before you can even activate the shield (and it has a 120 second cd on the shield itself... and the shield is based on how much mana you have when you use it.) BT is more expensive though, at 3700 total gold to Archangel's 3100 gold, but BT (imo) is a much better defensive item (though Seraph's is a better offensive item, due to the scaling potential).

This is just an example of the way that ADCs survivability items really just offer them a lot more than mage items. Mages definitely have a lot of access to flat MR/HP/Armor, but the ease with which they can access sustain or defensive items is lowered considerably. I think one of the biggest problems is item 3157 to be completely honest with you - it's a very situationally strong item as a defensive item and I think it's basically cockblocking any other serious defensive mage items. But I'd really, really like to have access to an AP version of Mercurial Scimitar for games where a cleanse would be better than rooting myself for 2.5 seconds... And I think AD should have a version of Zhonya's. I don't think there should be this dichotomy where everyone has uneven access to defensive options, because it creates this world where we get items (like sterak's) that have AD on them and suddenly AD's have crazy access to defensive items, but I don't think Riot would ever introduced an AP themed survivability item like that because item 3157 exists...

Riot's acknowledged in the past that they don't want mages to be able to have the burst heal that comes from spell vamp.

Why they don't just buffer the healing so it's granted as a HoT is beyond me.

DarkRitual2 votes

Burst heal would be fine, since mages can't have it sustained healing for eternity like Lifesteal can. Spell rotations can't last forever. Basic attacks can. ADC's lifesteal ability is limited by their ability to dish out basic attacks. Mages are limited to spellvamping by mana costs, and cooldowns both.

Mandaari1 votes

I think the idea is that you'd burst back up to full health instantly each spell rotation and play back while everything is on cooldown. ADCs need to constantly be aggressive. And then Riot introduced Death's Dance for whatever reason, which is totally counter to that whole line of thinking.

This isn't true. How are they discouraging Mages to not build Spell Vamp? Is it because Spell Vamp is not popular or even an attractive item buy in WotA anymore? They've said with the upcoming mage update, they will also tweak WotA and Gunblade - specifically Spell Vamp.

Saianna1 votes

This isn't true. How are they discouraging Mages to not build Spell Vamp?

  • Amount of spellvamp available (15%)
  • only 1/3 of spellvamp on AOE spells
  • unique stat
  • gives only AP and measly 10% CDR
  • This CDR punishes you to build different stuff that also add CDR (min-maxing)
  • Price is actually decent

Both WotA and Gunblade are made to work better with MANALESS champions. And AP champions? They have to worry about mana regen, early AP, survivability [Zhyona - amazing choice]. They just can't afford WOTA.

They've said with the upcoming mage update, they will also tweak WotA and Gunblade - specifically Spell Vamp.

Yea, I know. But spellvamp will still be an unique stat. And even then you'll be able to get Spell Vamp from just 1 item (because there won't be more)..

I hoped Riot Repertoir would add few more AP items to balance this out, but I guess he favours ADCs more [His Quinn rework wrecks bruisers in top, she gets some lazily-made nerfs out of ass that don't solve shit]...

Elikain1 votes

Yea, but it's 15% Spell Vamp of your raw damage, which means damage dealt by you with your abilities before MR gets into the equation and it purely scales off how much damage you can dish out with your abilities and it only increases with the more AP you have. So, it's completely fair to be a Unique effect from an item.

One big problem for Spell Vamp is that it's a very useful stat for sustained mages (like Vlad) and melee mages (Kata, Akali, Fizz...) It is also good in 1v1's for any mage to recover from a trade, bad fight or not get backed at the wrong time. But once teamfights start, as a burst mage, you are trying to avoid damage and deal as much as you can in return - making it a completely wasted stat after late mid-late game. Once damage get so high that you risk getting 1-2 shotted, the stat is worthless.

I propose a change like this:

  • Spell Vamp is still just in WotA, still Unique, same effect
  • ** New Unique effect** - Vampiric Infusion (Aura): Heal your teammates for 3% of the raw damage dealt by your abilities. Start with 5 stacks, gain + 1 stack/10 sec, spend 1 stack per ability used.

This way, you'd actually have supportive capabilities as a high damage burst mage and in my opinion, having it limited to stacks and static 3% damage (not split for AoE abilities) will also limit how much you can team heal at a time. You won't be penalized for not doing big AoE damage (you can fully use the effect on a single champion to heal you team up by a 5 spell roration) but it's not a better heal if you suddenly dump your abilities into a team - thus making AoE mages better than solo damage for team healing and damage mitigation from the champion select.

I realize that Spell Vamp from WotA used to be an Aura but it was simply the same bonus granted to all champions which wasn't a good idea. An Aura is good idea but Aura's effectiveness is solely based on your contribution to a fight so your allies can't abuse it this way by having high damage or frequent spells.

Just my 2 cents.

Well. Technically one press of Q deals damage in three instances and can be to more than one champion. It could be considered an AOE because of this. It definitely isn't your standard single target spell.

It's 1/3 because it's a multi-hit.

I believe they said it was due to it being multi-hit? If you land the spell three times, you'll spellvamp at the normal rate of the average damage rather than all three procs. Otherwise, you'll be getting three full spellvamp procs off of one spell, and I think that's what Riot is avoiding.

If it was one cast, one spell, then yeah. Are there more multihit spells that we can examine to ensure this behavior is consistent?

Fizz's W active is the only other comparable on-hit that applies Spell-Effects since everything else is a one-time thing like Kassadin or doesnt apply spell effects like Rek'Sai (Except for Kayle's E, but those are AoE).

It is counted as Single Target.

And it is not AoE.

It is treated as an AoE because you have the option of hitting 3 different targets per single cast. The sole definition of what AoE means. Syndra's Cataclysm is a single target spell that fully applies Spell Vamp, regardless if she uses 3 or 7 orbs for her ult. Her ult is treated as a single ability, per one cast and the ability just adds damage from her orbs into its total damage.

Meanwhile Fizz's W does the exact same thing as Mordekaiser's Q and is treated as Single Target despite him having the option of hitting 3 diffeent targets.

Do you even know what AoE means? Area of Effect. As in, an area affected by a spell. Mordekaiser's Q is single target in every definition of the word.

There are literally only two abilites that add damage to your auto attack without being a one-time deal and applying Spell Effects without affecting more than one target per attack. One is counted as AoE and the other is not.

If you won't accept it like this, then i'll say that his full cast of his Q is 3 hits. Hence 1/3rd of Spell Vamp per hit or full Spell Vamp value for full usage of his Q. So this way, it is treated as a single target ability but if you use all 3 intended uses.

As for Fizz's E, don't ask me that. Teemo's E doesn't use Spell Vamp. Morde's R applies Spell Vamp fully.

As a general rule, for single-target DoT spells, spell vamp will be applied to the total amount of damage dealt by all ticks.
