Draft Mode - Disable Bans for Newly Released Champions
Stop me if you've heard this one. A new champion comes out. People don't know how their mechanics work, and everybody assumes the champion sucks because the win rate starts below 45%.
Slowly but surely, people get the chance to play the character in blind. The people that play the character start to understand how he works, and after the first couple of weeks, Mobafire has builds for it, and ______ in the LCS says "no, really, they're not a bad champion", at which point, everybody kneels before their Lord and Savior, DoubleLift, and the character is accepted among the League after months of what they call "well intententioned joshing".
But, I mean, surely this isn't a trend! It's not like people said that about Taliyah - I mean, about Sol - ..I meant Bard -
The hilarious (yet altogether tragic thing about this) is just how self-fulfilling the entire cycle is. The first few weeks, nobody will let you play the champion. The people that do just barely managed to get that champion, and have played them, like, twice. Everybody sees them doing shit, and assumes it's not user error, and that the champion is just terrible.
I propose, for the first two weeks after a champion's release, that the ability to ban new champions be disabled. This gives greater incentive to pay 7800IP (or possibly RP) for a new champion, stops this ridiculous trend of self-fulling prophecy, and actually gives players a chance to embrace new content rather than fleeing in terror because #changeIsScary.
However, sometimes, champions really do have balance issues; ranked should be left alone.
But Draft is the place where I can be sure to get the role for the champion I want. I, myself, don't have the fastest computer. I rarely beat people to the bunch for my preferred lane, and it really discourages me from bothering to buy the champion at all upon release. The hype that's been built up for what should be exciting content is instead doused by the security blanket of Metathesiophobia, and yet it never fails that most "new" champs don't see nearly the use of older, more "reliable" champions, that have simply had more time to find the place in the meta by their respective fans.
Rito, please, I'm begging you here, help the people that are excited for new content embrace the ever changing meta, rather than letting one stale cracker ruin that environment for everyone. Help to ease new champions into the roster with a pat on the back and a re-assuring nod, rather than letting those champions be kicked around the back of the roster until somebody finally decides they're good enough so sit at the cool kids table.
I just want to play the champion that I paid 7800IP for.
. And there will be one when ???? is released too.
