Garen, unstoppable?

I am definitely not saying he is over powered. I just don't understand a majority of the games I have where he is my opponent. I will camp him top lane get top fed, and then take his tower. He will just push all day and become increasingly harder to kill and still become a late game terror. How do you put someone so far back only in the world like 0/12 and they come back with that score to win the game with no kills and shitty farm? I get it... a lot of you will say team work. I will say he was able to get so innately tanky that he dove head first into our team and sat on our adc while we helplessly tried to peel him and during that time the rest of our team got eaten alive because no cc left for the actual team fight.

"Helplessly tried to peel him"

Something tells me if you have trouble peeling Garen of all champs, your team fighting was going to suck regardless.

Bro he's a tank. That's what they do.

As a Garen main I think I can answer your question. Camping a Garen will indeed set him back, but since he is not a hypercarry he can still do well mid and late game while being behind. While hypercarries will eventually catch up, Garen and champions like him can simply get a few defensive items and let their natural scaling keep them relevant. You need to have him up against someone who scales far harder with kills and farm to have camping work. Even if this is the case Garen is designed to punish mistakes more than he is to make plays, so even if your top laner is ahead they have to play at least a little safe.

If you're against a Garen I would suggest playing someone with a fair amount of initiation. Let Garen do his own thing in the top lane while focusing on your mid and bot lanes. Garen may be a tanky beast, but he is very vulnerable to CC if his team's initiators cannot do their job. He's basically a power amplifier in team fights, so if his team is behind there is no chance of him solo carrying a fight. When I play Garen I specifically put myself in a position to be ganked easily, simply so my teammates are focused less by the enemy jungler. Even if I die if it allows my team to push their advantages I've done my job.

In short these are the two things to consider:

  1. If your top laner is a carry camping the enemy Garen will be useful.
  2. If your top laner is not a carry camping mid and bot lane is far more useful.

Ok RedniwediS I think I understand now and thank you for that info. TehNacho, we had me as VI, Malphite top lane against Garen , and I was 13-2, malphite was 7-2 and bot lane won and mid did average... went even with his opponent (sorry for all the commas I just want to type it while im recollecting it)

Someone did ask me later who my adc was and I told them vayne... and he simply said "ahhh thats why.." what the hell does that mean? I would think vayne is the tank killer of all the adc's... why would garen be a threat? Anyway... the teamfights would go like this... We would be pushed up for some reason even though we were winning the game. They would siege tower... Garen would give 0 shits and run through tower with silence and mercurial scimitar our cc. He would then jump on vayne and begin spinning for the win. I would Q him off.... but he would save merc for my ult... then malphite would ult onto their enemy team after he launched a Q to slow garen.. and yet some how garen still catches up and kills vayne and gets away with a quarter of health and I shit you not that happened probabaly 3 times which obviously gave them the game.

edit: while writing this I am seeing a few things that we really could not do anything about.

  1. QSS (which he sold after he got ahead... go figure) would eliminate my ult and his Q would elminate malph and braums slow. So I guess the match just was not in our favor in terms of champ picks to theirs. Our Lux also actually did well.. i thought went even. it was the opposite.. malph did worse later and lux ended up coming back. However.. lux damage got lower and lower as the game went on.

So yes.. between braum, lux, malph, myself as vi, we "helplessly tried to peel him" in vayne..... literally... (see what i did thar?)

Best bets against Garen are a high poke comp that can keep away from him, a knock back or two will work, then have your AD grab Bork and an AP grab Liandry's.
