Lifesteal Thematics
Hey y'all.
Morgana is one of my top-mastery champions (after Lux, of course), and one of my favorite parts about playing her, whether it be botlane or midlane, is her spell vamp.
I know a lot of people like to focus on the q, but honestly, Morgana has one of the last, if not flat-out the last, kits with innate spell vamp. Not abilities that are intended to heal the user, but like, every damaging ability she casts will heal her.
From my point of view, lifesteal is much more a magical effect than a physical one, which is why lifesteal being easily and conveniently available to nearly every AD-using class of champions (my nomenclature may be wrong, but that includes, fighters, adcs, juggernauts, and even assassins) but not to AP users, especially to the mages whose theme plays into "lifesteal", confuses me. When I say easily available, I mean lifesteal is available in numerous items that are completely core to many builds, in addition to a few typically later-game items, that AD-users can purchase without in any way gimping their damage output. Heck, doran's blade even comes with lifesteal.
Lifesteal, the name of which implies a clear necromantic effect, is basically a magical effect. Thematically, it makes much more sense for magical spells to sap the life of their targets than bullets or arrows. I think an argument could be made for Kalista's spears, but beyond that.... :/.
Don't get me wrong, from beyond a thematic's point-of-view, I completely understand why champion classes like fighters or juggernauts need lifesteal, given that they should be absorbing damage and putting out damage. Such levels of lifesteal on an ADC is another story, but I digress. However, what I find the most useful part of spell vamp/lifesteal to be is lane sustain, which is why I imagine AD user's get it in their doran's item.
Why is it that midlane Morgana should be the only mage who can stay in lane for a few waves and regain a significant fraction of her health while her AD laning opponent can do the same? Bar Morgana, no other typical mage (I'm looking at you, Vlad) can do that. If the reality were that the AD champions were being consistently poked out, I would rest my case, but the reality of it is that your typical AD midlane champion, already geared to face mages, can heal back any poke with doran's lifesteal while playing carefully, warlord's on some, and passives (akali ;-;, mixed damage) on others.
I wish there were more spell-vamp options that were actually viable on the mages whose theme it fits.
Thanks for reading this, I want to have a discussion!
