Poppy's shield doesn't return on destroying a plant

Derp R Us··69 votes·2,139 views

So I tried out Poppy and I think her passive is pretty neat.

Poppy periodically throws her buckler with her next basic attack, which then falls near her target, where it remains for up to 4 seconds. If the buckler kills its target, it bounces back to Poppy automatically. Enemies can step on the buckler to destroy it.

But for some reason, it doesn't bounce back to her when she destroys a jungle plant with it. This is kind of obnoxious, considering how if you're using a Blast Cone to try and escape, you don't want to leave your shield behind (unless your pursuer has serious impulse problems and feels the uncontrollable urge to stop chasing you just to stomp your buckler) because that sucker will help you survive.

She gets it back when last-hitting minions, monsters, champions, structures, wards, Teemo shrooms, etc.

But not plants. Just throwing that out there.

Sona passive also gets used up, along with TwistedFate stacked deck, item 3057 items, and Nasus can stack it

RavenMagus3 votes

Nasus can't stack it.

Katarina can shunpo to plants, though.

Honestly, I believe that Poppy's "bug" was intentional.

Imagine yourself chasing a poppy only to have her bounce her shield off a plant before you can kill her or step on the shield.

I hate it when Sona power chord gets used up on the plant like BRO I MISSED LIKE 40 CS TO SAVE IT FOR A CHAMPION HOW DARE YOU SPEND YOUR MISERABLE LIFE ON IT.

Put this in "Report a bug" so it can get the necessary attention from Riot.

I checked your OP.GG out of curiousity. You're confirming my suspicions that all Star Guardian Poppys have no idea what they're doing.

I can't take it anymore, have a guide.

item 3068 item 3025 item 3065 item 3111 are essential. But you want to build item 3009 early on and sell them for item 3111 later.

Get a mixed resistances item like item 3512 item 3026 item 3190 ending with a late game health/damage steroid item 3022 item 3071 item 3748.

12/0/18 masteries with Grasp of the Undying keystone (occasionally, Courage of the Colossus is a more valid choice, but this is only if you're playing ARAM or Poppy jungle.)

Stand near minions to proc Grasp of the Undying then throw your buckler at the enemy laner for poke.

Derp R Us2 votes

This has nothing to do with Poppy's shield not returning to her on hitting a plant, but thanks for the guide.

And judging by your OP.GG since you want to dig into others, you at least know what you're doing when you pick up the Keeper of the Hammer. Can't say the same for any other champion, though.

I'm just a lonely Poppy main who stares at the boards from a good distance away because I'm about as loved as a fed Yasuo.

I also don't really like the Star Guardian Poppy skin (the rest are fine, but SG Poppy's ridiculous) because it's efficiently turned the greatest tank into a laughingstock. I've never seen a legitimately good Star Guardian Poppy and I'm tired of people telling me not to pick my own main simply because "she's a troll pick".

Seriously, when a champion's winrate drops by 7% and their banrate rises above Teemo's simply because nobody wants them on their team, it gets out of hand. Whatever skin she gets next, she needs to be better defined as a tank (Steel Legion Poppy, anyone?).

Derp R Us2 votes

You main Poppy and you're hated?

That's a first.

To be honest, the only Star Guardian skin I have a problem with is Star Guardian Lulu. It's not purple! But, yeah, I guess if a skin stomped my main's reputation (assuming I had a main), I wouldn't like that skin.

Alright man, come here for a hug. You need it.

I changed my name to this because i mained every star guardian released besides lulu, I love her skin shes actually the most serious and straightforward of the guardians so idk where you get this joking bs. Not to mention gameplay wise she's not saying different things in game, barely any particle changes, and all thats different is her recall which is cute as fuck so idc what you say there. its a big world and you never met me before so yeah guess you wouldnt have seen me wreck faces with that skin, and i played against a couple decent ones myself. Get out more i guess.

I get YOU might not like it but to say it makes a walking midget soldier with a hammer "ridiculous" is kinda silly since her character as a whole was pretty silly to begin with. Poppy "I carry a hammer of immeasurable power, looking for its owner. Little do I know IM THE OWNER!" wacky sitcom music/sound effects

Yeah super srs character here.

In fact if ANYTHING the SG skin is her most serious one, since as a SG she accepts her power and responsibility with the hammer and thus, stops searching for the hero and BECOMES it!!!! League lore wise SG poppy would be the strongest poppy as shes the only one that would bring out the full power of the hammer on purpose. /rant

(Also your team complaints and such problems are on you, everyone i play with loves when i bring poppy to a team, and you being a poppy main doesnt make your guide the end all 100% god way. I build nothing like you and still run poppy just fine. You just sound like you wanted to complain about something off topic)

I play her support still. unfortunately most of your guide does not apply. Agreed on Grasp being generally better though. Mixed Resists and some health are still always good though.

EvilUnicornLord3 votes

Yeah, I know Poppy support as well.

I don't recommend picking it into CC heavy supports like Morgana or Zyra or you're going to die, but it's not too hard against melee supports and those lacking a lot of hard CC like Sona.

Now, I've only played it once since the new support items. Before those came out, my build was item 2303 item 3190 item 3111 and then whatever else you would build on tank Poppy.

Now with the newer support items, I went item 2303 item 3109 item 3190 (although the aura is removed, it's shielding active is still nice and it's a wonderful mixed resistances item). item 3107 is an iffy item, enemies can usually dodge out of its active before it goes off and the +10% heal/shield passive is close to useless for Poppy, but you can get it anyway without screwing up the build, just letting you know that you're forgoing combat items when you grab this. item 3025 is good because its spellblade passive, armor, and CDR. item 3117 for boots because they're cheap and they're essential for most supports, you can swap them out for item 3111 late game or item 3047 if a large portion of the enemy team is AD and they're lacking hard CC. And, for masteries, you can pick Courage of the Colossus if they have a ranged support or Bond of Stone if they have a melee one.

If you need any more advice, add me.

DarkRitual1 votes

I'm not a huge fan of Locket anymore, even as a tank support. item 3401 item 2045 item 3117 item 3109 item 3512 item 3060 feels much better for late game transitioning for me. Although, games right now rarely last long enough for me to get full build as it is. Usually a stomp one way ot the other, even in normals.

EvilUnicornLord1 votes

That build definitely works. You're going to be a monstrous splitpusher with Zz'rot and Banner of Command. I just find it better to build Eye of the Equinox, Eye of the Oasis, or Eye of the Watchers better than the non-warding variants so I can actually grab other items in the build (they need to make sightstone cheaper or at least make it build out of a "lesser sightstone" rather than a ruby crystal) because you're running on a support's income.

Also, winrates are more promising on those that build Eye of the Equinox than those that build Face of the Mountain and Ruby Sightstone. I just like to grab Locket so I'm not losing the shield active that Face of the Mountain has.

DarkRitual1 votes

I really like getting the lower item CD for all the actives, which is why I would go that route at all. Otherwise I'd certainly go for an Eyestone to speed the build up some.

As for sightstone, I've had a fair bit of thoughts on it. Here's some tweaks based on what you had suggested with a lesser sightstone type item. Each would of course carry on the gold gen passive through it's buildpath.

item 3301 + item 1004 = Amber Sightstone item 3302 + item 1028 = Jade Sightstone item 3303 + item 1052 = Lapis Sightstone

Amber Sightstone + item 3067 = Topaz Sightstone. Extra Health, some CDR, and minor Regens. 3 Charges, refills passively (recharge time scales with level, slightly slower than yellow trinket though [still refills normally when shopping at fountain]) Jade Sightstone + item 2053 = Emerald Sightstone. Extra Armor, Point Runner passive. 4 Charges, refills based on distance traveled. Lapis Sightstone + item 3113 = Sapphire Sightstone. Extra AP, some Movespeed, some Mana Regen. Naturally has 2 charges [only fills up to this when shopping], but has max of 3. Gain 1 charge on kill/assist.

And, no, Trinity Force is great on Vi, Jax, and Yorick. But not Poppy. Iceborn Gauntlet is far better for her.

65 armor OR... phage boost, MS boost, health, attackspeed (actually valuable on her), sets up her strong above-average base AD, lets her itemize into Starakk's for cheap mitigation.

Are there certain matchups where Iceborn is superior? Yes. Trinity fits her playstyle better when she actually needs to carry.

EvilUnicornLord3 votes

But Iceborn Gauntlet costs 2700 G to Trinity Force's 3733 G. That's a 1033 G difference. And, besides, Iceborn Gauntlet isn't even the first item you get. Unless you're up against AP, you rush Sunfire Cape on Poppy.

Poppy is a tank, primarily, with secondary as fighter. She's actually very similar to Shen in the fact that she's a dueling tank that can take multiple roles without much trouble.

But Trinity Force is far less superior to other choices on Poppy. As I mentioned, it's a great item on other fighters, but it falls short on tanks.

If your big defense for itemization is "HER PRIMARY IS A TANK!", no. Just no. Poppy has immense dueling potential and in lower rankings (where 99% of players are), she can snowball really hard. The building parts of Trinity Force give lots of value, help win trades earlier, and in general just make her a beast to set up for smashing things.

MS, attackspeed, and HP are all sorely under-estimated stats on Poppy. Sunfire does not give her that carrying and pushing potential. In fact, in a solid portion of games, I take deadman's plate instead for more speed and roaming.

Look, clearly you're just going to argue that building Poppy as a fighter is superior to building her as a tank.

This may work for you because you might play a lot of fighters and not tanks (I personally know an assassin main who does best when he builds Poppy full AD), but I main tanks. When I play Jarvan IV, I build him as a tank because I play tanks better than I play divers. If I told a Jarvan main that tank Jarvan was far better than AD Jarvan, I'd only be right for myself and my plays as tank Jarvan would likely be worse than that J4 main's AD J4 plays.

Go right ahead. If you find yourself believing that diver Poppy is better for you, if you believe that full AP Poppy is better for you, go build that. But I main standard tank Poppy, so I'm going to remain convinced that tank Poppy is better than fighter Poppy.

I play Poppy top, support, and jungle.

And I usually only pick her if the enemy team is dash heavy (for instance, they had a Vi, Riven, and Vayne so most of their team had a dash) and my team needs a good counter to the dashes...Plus, she is my clutch jg pick. I actually have a decent KDA with her..will not say the best but I think it is pretty good.

Ryze is the champ I have a low kDa but I still play him because that is the only way to learn.

Then feel free to keep under-performing and sitting as an unranked, giving passionate, unsolicited advice on a champion you play a lot hut aren't particularly good at.. Just because you 'main' a champion doesn't mean you know them well. And the fact that you play J4 as a straight tank in every situation is proof enough of that.

If you know a champion you should be able to build them as the situation requires. In PUG games, you need to carry, and tank poppy doesn't do that.
