Mordekaiser did 73% of my health with one Q.

Balanced.
The game isnt balanced around your missing skill of staying out of range of threats.

To be more ACCURATE here, they were reworked to make that SPECIFICALLY how you fight them.
Yes positioning is an amazingly important skill and there are plenty of champions in the game that unleash the "rekt" when you are in range. And one way you don't die is to stay out of range until you have a favorable engage or poke them down 6ft under.

Ultimately that is never the single element a character is balanced around...unless it's 6 item + elixir ryze...That one is pretty much stay out of his range incarnate.
Don't get in melee range of him. And before you say thats easier said than done, no its about as easily done as it is said, except for once every 5 minutes when he has flash.
Or if his team has cc and he builds properly so he's sticky.
Then that's called Teamwork, and it means you got outplayed, not that he has no counterplay.
Who said anything about him not having counterplay? At the same time this "why are you standing close to him" nonsense people are spewing is ridiculous. There are people playing him in Challenger and crushing skulls with his third strike from Q. It's really not that hard to hit people with it if you have a good team and build him sticky.
Yes, that's if you have a team that can keep them locked down. He's essentially a Schoolyard Bully: If he has more power than you, he will abuse it. If he doesn't, he's nothing.
requires a lot of coordination to pull off, and even with his massive damage he still have gaping weaknesses like Sieging without Dragon and staying in lane against strong harassment early on. If he's strong, you'll be fighting a Raid Boss. If he's weak, he's essentially a
Promoted Melee Minion.
Very few champions are as Feast-Or-Famine as Mordekaiser is, which is funny because Riot said they hate these champions, and now we have one that literally exemplifies the trope.
You let Mordekaiser get a third Q off.
Balanced.
On a serious note. As a Morde main... Who do I play mid now?
If you want a bursty AP melee mid?
Cho'gath.
You'd be surprised how many champions have abilities or combos that can deal that much damage (though most of them are ultimates, but usually with range).
Also, he was probably fed and a few levels ahead of you, and you probably had no MR or HP from items. Morde is strong right now, but he isn't way over the top and is still as vulnerable to kiting as ever.
is more vulnerable to kiting than ever.
FTFY
I don't really give a damn what the circumstances are. Nobody should be able to do that much damage with one skill, 22 minutes into the game.

Oh look, a cc spell... aaaand she's dead.
Also her ult does not deal the damage instant...

Morde's counterplay.

can do that to.
Except even with invisibility, an amazing gap-closer, and a ranged slow: finding players to actually get isolation damage on is a huge pain.
If you let the only champion in the game with 0 CC and 0 mobility hit you, while isolated, in melee range: well, in not sure what to tell you other than "watch out".
You know what is really good? Either building tanky or getting an Iceborn Hauntlet or Frozen mallet.... MAYBE idk... you will be able to kite him. -- a guy who has beaten the new morde

Yes, I'll be sure to do all that while playing support Vel'Koz.
Support Velkoz is Perfect vs Mord!!! You have a Slow, a knockBACK, With a Rylias Crystal Cepter somewhere in the game it should be gg bb tt Pregnan CC.
73% of your health
what did you have less than 2k health?
and no mr/armor?
This must have been your sarcastic reaction:
