What am I doing wrong with Darius's Q?

Lately it would seem that if I hit the outer rim of Darius's Q it doesn't seem to make the sound effect that it does damage, and the opponent does not seem to take damage. I know that lag could be a factor but it wouldn't answer the entire question since the problem seems to be able to be consistently reproduced. I don't know what I'm doing wrong since I see other Darius players hit the Q the same way and it does damage. Perhaps I am hitting them with that notch that the hitbox shows when you place the mouse over the skill? I really don't know.

Maybe try and make sure the enemy’s entire hit box is hit with the q. Instead of trying to hit the edge of the enemy with the literal edge of your q, try and have the edge of your q hit the enemy on the side not facing you. So there will be a smaller chance of you missing it and whiffing on a big portion of your damage/sustain. That was my best attempt at trying to explain what I was visualizing, hope you understand!

Or try and not move around too much when you cast q. So use your combo, but when you use your q try and position yourself correctly or move with the enemy champ so you get a guaranteed q. One thing that you can do is use the w slow to allow you time to get a good setup for the q.
