How People Feel About Playing as Mordekaiser - Survey Results

Nrsh·9/22/2019, 2:24:46 PM·86 votes·25,495 views

So, I started seeing quite a lot of negativity regarding the Mordekaiser rework lately and I decided to investigate to find out how people really feel about playing Mordekaiser. I created a survey in Google Forms and got 400 participants to answer it. This is the survey if you want to see the questions for yourself (or fill it in if you play Morde, though unless I get a significant amount of answers I will not create another thread analyzing it): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeO6d6FDlOfnIYNo-fVlZkjGiIX8G1JI7b737ZA_mDUqMIJRQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Now let's get to the results (ignore the Hebrew bits that are in there):

First question:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/545755743790563328/625286994099961858/Morde_survey_question_1.png

There isn't much to say about this question however, you can see that there aren't many people who picked Mordekaiser up as a casual pick because of the rework, but there's a nice amount of people who picked him as a main because of it. As a big part of a rework is to make a champion more inviting to play it seems like the rework did a nice job in that term, however there is still a relatively low amount of new mains compared to old mains, and considering there weren't too many Mordekaiser mains to begin with, I wouldn't say it is a great success either.

Second question:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/545755743790563328/625291898667663372/Morde_survey_question_2.png

So, as it can be seen in this question a lot of people are satisfied with the rework (4 being the most voted for with 30%), but there is something that prevents it from being a perfect 5, as 5 is the least voted for answer with only 13.3%. There is also a very considerable amount of votes for 1 (17.8% - complete dissatisfaction) and 2 (20% - only certain things are good in it). Then there are the votes for 3 with 19%, that basically mean "the rework wasn't a failure, but it has to be fixed". So all in all it seems like the solution leans towards fixing and tweaking (maybe even a small mini rework similar to some other recently reworked champs like Kayle) and not towards a revert or something drastic.

Third and fourth questions (as they are tied together):

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/545755743790563328/625297811159646238/Morde_survey_question_3.png

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/545755743790563328/625301105559076886/Morde_survey_question_4.png

Now we are starting to see one of the problems I was talking about earlier: W. We'll get into the reasons people dislike it later (the last question), but as it is right now we can clearly see that W is by far the most hated ability on new Morde with a whopping 49.2% "hated" votes and only 3.2% "loved" votes. People seem to generally like Q and Passive and E and R seem to also need some work being quite controversial (similar amount of "hate" and "loved" votes).

Fifth question:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/545755743790563328/625308733471457292/Morde_survey_question_5.png

This one speaks for itself. People are clearly unsatisfied with the diversity of new Morde's rune and build paths. Whether it be adding AP bruiser items or adding AD scaling to Morde, there needs to be a change.

Sixth question:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w6hxjwcgJzADO_lZ3aX7BpxhbHV4AE3aGYaOQO103h4/edit?usp=sharing

I sorted out all the comments to positive negative and neutral. That question wasn't a must and so there are less than 400 answers to it. There are several things you can gather from the comments:

A. People want W to be changed, they mostly hate W2 and feel like the healing is useless.

B. People really want more skill expression on Morde, they feel like he has a low skill ceiling and is boring and linear.

C. Morde's items and rune paths are not very good as they are right now.

While generally not regarded as a failure it's load and clear that people want some major changes on Mordekaiser. It seems to be mostly agreed Mordekaiser is not very satisfying to play and is linear and doesn't feel rewarding. It's a partial success that should be optimized cause it doesn't suffice as it is right now.

I'd like to thank all of you who participated int the survey and helped me gather information. Stay awesome, Nrsh ooout!

I really like that you properly gathered data. most players come on here and flame riot's balancing team which personally annoys me that they don't look at the other side but this post shows riot what players are dissatisfied with and what they like and it give helpful tips.

I hope riot sees this and does not ignore us like aatrox mains.

I appreciate the effort and this was an interesting read, but 400 players is a very low sample size.

Nonetheless, it's still cool to read this and see how some people feel. I like new Morde but I wish his ultimate was designed differently in some regard, it feels horrible to play against.

Personally I just want his passive and W to swap :/ I liked it when he had a shield, all the time.

I feel like hes fair to play and play against I'm no main but I do some time play him and he feels like he's in an ok spot.

I hate that i can't lane mid anymore and be a decent answer to poke/all in champs. Old Morde's passive shield allowed me to survive hard lanes that other melee champs just couldn't, and that gave him a nice niche.

Passive is problematic because against matchups where you can reliably use it, you hard stomp, and it's near useless against ranged champs with disengage. Q is alright, i miss 3rd Q flash bonking someone but it's a decent ability. The new W is such a dissapointing ability. 90% of the time you doubletap it off CD to get a whopping 20 hp back. Yea it gets stronger later on but against ranged matchups it's useless. The E is pretty cool. Letting you choose where the hand starts allows for some cool outplay potential (like grabbing people out of dashes similar to a Thresh flay) The ult isn't fun for anyone. It feels horrible to play against and isn't really enjoyable to use on someone either.

Just my personal views as a pleb Morde player.

Atleast he look great visually.

I fully agree with the ult.

It's cool as fuck, the best looking and feeling ult in the game for sure.

But it's so binary, awful to play against, and takes way too much power from the kit.

It's just like Sylas' ult, completely stupid and random and incohesive with the kit.

I will qualify this with the fact I'm NOT an Old Morde Main, or anything similar; I'm a Supp Main.

That said, I actually really like W; I like keeping it highly charged and deploying it when it's most useful. The charge mechanic allows it to have a higher cap than a costless flat shield would be allowed. And W2 gives me a way of regaining health without having to Recall, though I only use it if I expect to have time to charge it up again.

It is important to get feedback from the Mains whose champ was changed, but it is also important to listen to the other players now playing them. If the champ were reverted, maybe the changes reverted could be used as the basis for a new champ instead of just being abandoned

Excellent post, gathered data is very useful.

I'd add my thought on the rework here, for anyone interested. I think we all agree Mordekaiser rework is a general succes: it may have flaws and leave some discontented, but we are very, very far from the catastrophe of Aatrox rewok. So we can all be in a good mood and discuss calmly and constructively.

The reasons for malcontent.

I feel like the biggest controversy for his old mains, is the absence of a permashield, which was iconic, but undeniably what ate all pre-rework Morde's power budget forcing him to be a meme pick. The reason for reworks is also often to purify the kit from some toxic elements that plague it. As a champion main, seeing past the bias can be hard, and I know from experience, as I strongly opposed the introduction of a warning on Rengar ultimate, many years ago. Now i see that it was necessary, and for the best of both the parts involved, Rengar players and their opponents; but at the time, scarejumping enemies was the core Rengar experience for me, and I couldn't renounce it.

So, about the W, I cant think of anything but tweaking the numbers in order to make it a satisfying spell to use. That said, it's hard to imagine Morde's main (and already strong) defensive tool buffed while keeping his offense unaltered.... and this brings us to my next point.

Delayed damage pattern.

I know that what I'm proposing wouldn't work well in today's burst and mobility damage league... but I wish Mordekaiser had more DPS, in exchange for survivability. Right now, hitting E-Q chunks like crazy, and I think that's not optimal considered the champion's fantasy. "Mordekaiser runs you down, you try to hit him, but for naught. He doesnt care, doesnt flinch, doesnt stop and beats you up" - that's what I want to feel when i play him. So I would like to propose some changes:

  • his Q is now a 3 part ability. More DPS, less burst. Hitting is multiple times increases Morde's skill floor, and that's not a bad thing. Last but not least, makes him fairer to play against in the Death Realm.
  • his passive doesn't damage only, but steals life from those caught in it. More survivability in longer fights, and in though situation in the middle of multiple enemies.

The ultimate.

Not a prime example of counterplay, is it? But I don't think that's going away. Also, getting out of it with a QSS makes it a only a nuisance for competent players. That said, I really miss unslaving the souls of my enemies. I really do. Getting a reward for killing somebody in the Death Realm is intended, as you steal their stats. Why not remove something as bland as that, while re-introducing the good old pet ghost? That's more nostalgia than anything.

Not only in the toplane.

The first Morde rework, did many wrongs, but it did something very interesting too: it introduced that vague idea that a Juggernaut could work in the botlane. Having Mordekaiser have some botlane synergies would be nice, in my opinion. I have a couple of proposals:

  • make W2 consume any shield Mordekaiser has on, not only his own. That way, he could get more sustain from enchanters.
  • reintroduce drake ghost. I loved it to death. That's personal, obviously.

Thank you for reading!

I’m really sad I didn’t see this poll. I’d have loved to be apart of this data.

4+ million mastery Morde OTP since his release in 2010.

I’d have given the rework a 1.

I’d have said W was my least favorite skill, but I think a better representation of this data would be “please rank Morde’s skills in order of of least favorite to most favorite”, because you’re forcing people like me to pretend his R is OK when I tell you his W is awful.

Best Veigar FL9/27/2019, 4:29:02 AM2 votes

I only just discovered this poll but figured i'd share my thoughts anyways. I played Morde decently often before the juggernaut rework and despite my name he was my go to mid laner. E was always my favorite ability on him with W being a close second. So once the juggernaut update came and his E fell off in power and W ended up being the mess that it was my playing of Morde fell off too with occasional playing being done of him since with him ending up sitting comfortably right at mastery 5 before the current rework.

Ended up trying it on PBE and live and while it was nice to see my favorite skin for him, lord, end up looking so good his new kit just never clicked with me. My favorite skill is the passive tho i'm not a fan of how you can only get it from fighting champs and epic monster. As for my least favorite while W2 is a joke and W1 really feels kind of lacking for taking up a whole ability slot and R really just doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of his kit imo the ability I like the least is his E. It's such a far reach from his prior Es and just feels nothing like them. Yes Q invalidates the need for E to be aoe but he already had plenty of aoe before the juggernaut rework without needing to get something situational for that aoe be it with an ally right next to you or so long in combat.

I miss the floor mace spikes.

Riot "Uhm yeah, but we still need more data"
