Concerning the removal of spellvamp

Most people never thought much of spell vampirism. Almost no champs used it in meta because many ranked players would prefer to either take the route of a glass cannon mage or an ad lifesteal (Because it's obviously much more consistent). We also see, with the death of hybrid champs, that item 3146 is no longer even a viable option for a lot of champs that would've previously used it.

I, personally, loved the spellvamp mechanic. I used it on Rumble, which helps with his otherwise nonexistent lane sustain, Amumu, who's tantrum became a serious self-heal in team fights and when laning, and, my personal favorites, Jax and Warwick.

Jax is the unsung ap master. I found that stacking ap and spellvamp on Jax (with a little AD thanks to item 3146 ) would result in his Empower being able to quickly eliminate squishier opponents as well as buffing his grandmaster's might's passive and boosting his grandmaster's might's active magic resist (essential when you have an overfed Katarina or Teemo running around). The spellvamp made it so AP Jax could still have sustain in addition to all the above listed bonuses. It was a beautiful synergy.

AP Warwick became one of my favorite champs quickly, with spellvamp boosting the healing from his Q and R (albeit at the cost of a little AP or durability, as well as his R being strictly a dive/CC).

Also, several other mages/assasins, like Ryze and Katarina, could benefit greatly from spellvamp.

Also, by eliminating spellvamp you create an odd conundrum where there are spellvamp runes and masteries but no real spellvamp in game.

Please Riot. Bring back spellvamp. It added a little more variety to mages other than the classic item 3135 item 3089 item 3157 item 3165

If you want to see more dynamic mages, with more room for strategy and differing playstyles, you can't start taking away core stats like spellvamp. Maybe it wouldn't have made meta anytime soon, but maybe that was because of imbalances in spellvamp items. Spellvamp has always been wonky, being a lifesaver one moment and unreliable the next, based on cooldowns, but that's what makes it dynamic. It forces players to adjust their play style to suit their build. Just because it wasn't popular, doesnt mean it should be removed. Otherwise Poppy would be long gone.

I was upset when I saw Atma's Impaler removed, but that was understandable. Tanks shouldn't be gaining AD while continually getting beefier. That's why I didnt post about it. But this is the removal of a game mechanic entirely.

If you saw problems with spellvamp, rebalance it. Make it so spellvamp is a Heal over Time, or make it so that Will of the Ancients gave less AP and more spellvamp (effectively forcing players to choose between sustain and damage).

Please Riot, don't do this.

Repost: I understand there's a lot of variation between abilities for different champions, which another summoner pointed out, making it hard to balance between all the champs. But just like you dont try to make item 3003 viable for Garen Darius or Akali (obviously), items that give spellvamp should only be viable for certain champs. Yes, that would mean that it would be a weaker item that would rarely see meta, and theres obviously room for abuse on champs like Aatrox and Vladimir who's abilities play off of their health, making spellvampirism a cure for their primary resource weakness, but I still believe that there must be a way to balance it adequately. With no critical chance for spells, and with the removal of spell vamp, the only goal for any AP build is to rack up as much AP as possible. This eliminates variation or dynamic gameplay. Winning or losing exchanges in a mid lane mostly composed of AP champs boils down to who gets item 3001 first. I understand there is a dynamic aspect to the unique passives in AP items, but these aren't core stats. In the end, it doesnt matter if I have item 3116 and item 3151 , which play nicely off each other, because if I 1v1 another mage who has more AP, I don't stand a chance. AP becomes the sole ruling force when you eliminate spell vampirism. Sure, CDR helps in prolonged fights, but most mages/assasins are focused down or have burst down the opposition before that can make a large impact. Regardless of whether or not spell vampirism itself makes a comeback, there needs to be some kind of added dynamic to AP builds. Hextech items, Zhonya's, and other actives make things more interesting, but they dont change the identity of a build. They only add last resort options or kill security at the cost of a little AP. Maybe it would be possible to reformat Will of the Ancients to heal for a flat amount based on champ level, but even that is arguably minute. If spell vampirism must die, more dynamic AP builds must be introduced. Otherwise meta will never be anything but item 3089 item 3135 item 3020 item 3165 item 3157
