Needlessly Large Rod Build

Why didn't they make Needlessly Large Rod, Amplifying tome(435g) + Blasting Wand(850g)? Even at 1285g which is 35g more then it currently cost everyone would take a build over waiting for the full amount.

That's sortof the point. They want people to have to make the strategic decision of whether to hold out for a bit more gold, or to back sooner (and probably be safer) but be behind on the 'big' item. Similarly, pushing your lane opponent out of lane before NLR can be a good strategy as it currently stands, while if lots of relatively cheap items exist it's not as big as deal.

That's wouldn't really effect that, I mean you would get a minor ap boost but you'd still be getting it in a timely fashion.

I assure you that you're going to have a much rougher time if you get forced back with 900 gold 2-3 times in a row with the current design, than you would if it built out of components. In the former case you're stuck with a blasting wand and maybe an amp tome and a bunch of gold you can't use to further your big item (so probably buy boots/wards/pots instead), while in the latter case you get your big item anyway and the aggressive play of the opponent that forced your early backs doesn't pay off.

Just like BF Sword, it is a power spike item. They lowered the price from 1600g and nerfed the amount of AP it gave you a while back.

I feel like it is not a bad choice from Riot, as it only gives AP as a stat. If it combined from two different items, then it'd likely need something extra on it, other than pure AP.

The thing is though as all those items only give AP there's no real reason to not make it that build, you put those together and give a nice building tree instead of having to wait for the full amount.
