Why am I getting matched up with Diamond players?

I love League, played it for years casually with friends on and off. Over the years I have played I never had a liking to ranked at all. It always felt like work to me. When a game feels like work it becomes unfun, to me at least. So I am unranked. Since I am, shouldn't I be matched with other unranked players? Or at least Bronze/Silver players? I suppose not as I am put into games with Gold, Platinum and Diamond players. Does this seem fair to anyone? When you get matched up with players who are clearly at a higher skill cap the game gets pretty old fast. Not to mention higher ranked players take the game much more serious that someone who is trying to have fun like me. If anyone has an answer I would appreciate it! Thank you :D

I could be wrong, and I most likely am, but someone told me that ranked MMR and unranked MMR are kept separate. So, to put it simply, your unranked MMR is matching their unranked MMR, regardless of their ranked MMR.

I have no ranking and I get matched up with gold and above all the time in normals. not sure why.

Because apparently the game thinks you're good enough. Nice job, champ.

Diamonds are trash.
