Matchmaking and ELO system needs a rework

The matchmaking on this game has not improved in over 2 years. Win streaks are quickly countered by matching players with lesser skilled players on losing streaks. Ally players afks, intentionally feeds, or just decides to roam and die all game? No worries. Riot will still take the full amount of LP from you with punishing the offender. Unfortunately, Riot does not consider these actions as toxicity. Regardless of how your level of play, you are ultimately at the mercy of your team. Try to shot call or offer a strategy, players say they will "do what they want" OR "I just mute all and then do my thing." This does not promote teamwork. According to Riot's own "Summoner's Code" they should make more of an effort to uphold said codes. Very little about this game is skill based in terms of matchmaking or climbing the proverbial ladder. At the LEAST, LP gained should be reflective of play/effectiveness in each game.

Update #1: 4/30/15 I've had a couple of trolls harass me on this post about my play/skill level, so I decided to provide more evidence as clarity to why Riot's matchmaking and elo system should receive a complete rework:

1.) After receiving some advice from my coach, I went on an easy 3 game win streak where I was only gaining +16LP. Next game, Riot not only gives me players on losing streaks, but makes me last pick. I then loss -20LP.

2.) Here are the players who were on my team. Note: Look at the deaths, cs, build, summoner spells, and levels of my team vs to my level and cs.

3.) Now, look at how many of those players were on losing streaks, their recent games, and their stats in those games compared to mine above on #1.

No one I was matched with was at my same "skill level," had similar stats, nor had as many Ranked games played as I do. This appears to be evidence as to why many players think you should be required to 1v5 and win a "team" game. It becomes a matter of luck when you are matched with players on losing streaks, which not only increases your chance of losing, but ensures that they may rage, feed, blame others, or leave/afk.

Update #2: 5/1/15 Won 3 games in a row then again paired with players who are either on losing streaks or have a history of dying a lot/feeding/afk'ing.

Player #1: Fed his lane, was verbally abusive, didn't call mias/follow up, and afk'd. Poor engage overall. http://i.imgur.com/hFXIJhO.jpg?1[/img]

Player #2: Played decent, but made the mistake of picking Nami against a Naut. No sightstone/sweeper. http://i.imgur.com/Oo4R6M9.jpg?1[/img]

Player #3: Unskilled overall. Only won 8 ranked games. History of feeding/dying a lot. Never contested dragon. Rarely ganked lanes. Didn't communicate in game. http://i.imgur.com/KVOMAZd.jpg?1[/img]

Player #4: Decent mechanics, but poor decision making overall. Also has history of dying a lot. Had a negative attitude http://i.imgur.com/tfK2IAP.jpg?1[/img]

Update #3: 5/15/15 I updated the images from Update #1 that revealed some players names as requested. I wanted to present an interesting observation of Ranked matchmaking. For those new to this thread, I currently analysis matchmaking after 3 Ranked wins in a row.

I won another 3 Ranked games today. It has been my observation that after 3 wins, the matchmaking tends to find players that will cause you to lose in comparison to playing you with higher skilled players overall. I loss a game after my 3 Ranked wins as expected. I did not look up the players history before nor after the game. To break the "tilting" of my games, I played an ARAM then returned to Ranked.

The first queue had a player who intended to Jungle Teemo. This was a red flag and I quickly looked the player up. His current standings are Bronze 5 (25LP) with 5W 11L (Win Ratio 31%) at MMR 813 are pictured below. My current standing is Bronze 4 (31LP) with 268W 278L (Win Ratio 49%) at MMR 886. Fortunately for me someone dodge this queue.

This next matchmaking was also not corrected and favored a losing or unskilled team. Player #1 entered the game stating that he was not a very good player and to not expect much from him. His current stats are Bronze 4 (12LP) with 14W 35L (Win Ratio 29%). In addition, was Player #4 current stats are Bronze 5 (20LP) with 5W 14L (Win Ratio 26%). The matchmaking slightly improved with Player #3 current stats at Bronze 4 (0LP) with 426W 433L (Win Ratio 50%) and Player #5 current stats at Bronze 5 (41LP) with 181W 186L (Win Ratio 49%). I lacked confidence in Player #1 and dodged this game. I will observe the results of the next Ranked matchmaking queue.

Update #3.1: 5/15/15 Queued for the Ranked game and braced myself for the impeding loss. The results are pictured below. What was interesting in this matchmaking was the Sona who had a troll name, was unranked with 1 win and 3 losses, and afk'd early from the game. Will attempt to win a Normal game to break the "tilt."

One thing you need to realize is that KDA does not show overall skill. It does show skill on one aspect of the game. But the goal of the game is not to get the most kills. That shows that you are good at one thing. The goal of the game is to kill the nexus. If you're not able to do that, you are not accomplishing your goals. Instead of focusing so much on KDA and CS, focus on how you can help your team as well.

MMR works off of Wins vs Losses and the order in which the are achieved. If you go on a winning streak, the system can adjust your MMR higher, which will match you with more skilled opponents. The system does not try to match you with people who are doing bad if you are doing good. Some people have off games or make mistakes. Stop judging other people on 30 minute experiences with them.

As for the AFKs, they will even out once you play enough games (200 or so). Since there is a 55% chance the enemy team will have an AFK/DC/Troll/Feeder and a 45% chance on your team (given that you are not the AFK/Troll/DC/Feeder), the Law of Large Numbers shows us that you will win more games than lose due to them.

If you can't carry your team then you are exactly where you belong. YOU are the only constant factor.

"Very little about this game is skill based in terms of matchmaking or climbing the proverbial ladder" Hopefully you aren't serious about this statement. The rank you are in league greatly reflects your skill in soloq.
