I want a good Aatrox.

I really love the champion, as he is very fun to play (most of the time). You build full lifesteal and by late game you're an unkillable monster with a free revive. The only problem is that you will almost NEVER get to said late game. His early game is so bad it's laughable, as he feels about as squishy as a Veigar or Sona. His jungle clears aren't bad thanks to his build in lifesteal, but his ganks are pretty sad when they two shot you and laugh as they run away while you sit there for ages reviving. I have no clue how he can be fixed but please please PLEASE figure it out. I want him to live up to his potential and be a decent pick, instead of telling my team "Yeah I'm just gonna farm for the first twenty minutes, see you guys later."

just use E for poke a few times then auto minions twice and activate the dmg W jump in with Q + AA + E enjoy easy trades because the enemy will underestimate you anyway.

Ya know I'm a tad surprised I don't see him anymore. Figured that Crit Heal mastery (forget its name) would make him a monster.

Guess not? I don't play the guy but I've always seen Aatrox's do fine when I do see em.

He is feast or famine - if you get some kills, you are a monster until they outscale. IF not, aatrox is a free kill.

While Aatrox can be a life steal tank, it is not advisable to build a whole lot of life steal. He becomes very squishy and very susceptible to burst damage, as his power is in long sustained duels. If you are just trying to split push and never team fight, you can get away with it. However, if you need to team fight, you will just get blown up and would have to play more like an assasin/clean up crew.

As far as itemization, I usually start BORK. It is a good core item on Aatrox. If in ahead in lane at that point, I'll go for Ravenous Hydra or Bloodthirster depending on the situation (if I'm splitting, I go hydra if not I go Bt). If I fall behind in lane I usually then build a defensive item. Spirit visage is usually a good bet and it enhances your life steal while still granting you some tankiness. However, if there are no real significant AP threats on the enemy team, it's tough to build that, in which case I would go for Dead Man's Plate.

As far as team fighting goes, Aatrox wants to flank the back line. He's no good attacking the front line as you don't really build armor pen on him and he has to go mele to really get his DPS down. That's why DMP is so nice on Aatrox because you flank, avoid the CC which would negate your DMP passive and then you hope to jump on the backline and either take out the backline carries or keep them preoccupied long enough for your backline carries to take out their tank line.
