AD/AP Hybrid Builds, how useful are they?

Well, the crux of the question is in the title, but I was wondering just how useful hybrid builds are, using items like item 3146 item 3124 item 3078 to their full potential. Mainly was curious as to which champions could actually use a hybrid build well, and how effective it is compared to standard builds. Jax, Akali and Irelia are the only three I can think of who'd really benefit from a full-on hybrid build, though in practice none of them use one.

Well I have a hybrid build for Malzahar I've thought it over hard, and its still technically a work in progress imo, but this is my dream build for him and not obtained in this order either: item 3071 item 3116 item 3174 item 3040 item 3512 item 3146

This build is something that uses the item 3146 due to not giving him any unneeded stats like Attack Speed (though it does give him lifesteal which is meh, wish it would apply to his voidlings though) which both item 3078 & item 3124 give, among other things. The idea that steamed the creation of this build was the change to item 3116 that gave his voidlings the ability to proc its slow passive. The voidlings can also proc item 3071 "Cleave" passive due to them dealing physical damage, and scaling off 100% of his bonus AD (when enraged it increases to 120% scaling). I still put a lot of power from AP into him but it can end up being the death of someone if they flat out ignore my voidlings. It will cost them dearly since they can deal some serious damage from shredding letting them increase their damage just by doing voidling things! Of course with this build I'm willing to adjust it as needed for certain matches. This is just my dream hybrid build for him.

Due to how penetration works and stats scale multiplicatively, you are typically better off going AD or AP instead of both. I would say that the best exception to this is Evelynn, who can make good use of both AD and AP items simultaneously.

AP is not a good stat on Irelia and she doesn't benefit from SpellVamp. Trinity Force, Attack Speed, AD, and defensive stats are far more worthwhile.

Oh, yes, Evelynn. Forgot about her existence. I could see how she benefits from one, too. Kinda curious why it is that she can do so compared to others.

Keep in mind that this is my own opinion:

  • Her offensive abilities (Q and E) both scale with AD and AP. While her ultimate only scales with AP, her E gives a significant attack speed steroid for her autoattacks.
  • Her Q has a naturally low cooldown, so she doesn't have to itemize for CDR.
  • Her shield provides a significant amount of health during fights, which means that she can focus on itemizing resistances (many of which come with AD or AP).
  • Her kit synergizes with almost every stat in the game. This means that her build can easily adapt to fill any role on a team and that she can choose items primarily for their passive and active effects.

While much of the same could be said for Jax, the primary difference with Evelynn is her playstyle. While Jax has to be durable to duel people and survive teamfights, Evelynn functions as an assassin and can often flank her opponents, which means that she doesn't need to be build as defensively.

On the topic of Jax, wouldn't going full hybrid still be relatively viable if it was somewhat like how he's built now (BoRK, Triforce, tanky), but more like... Hextech, Guinsoo's, Triforce, tanky? I mean, if Jax gets fed while laning, he can go full offense and do stupidly glass cannon builds and still survive because of his ult, but, yeah.

It depends. I don't feel that hybrid Jax is nearly as powerful as the more meta build, because Jax doesn't actually have any decent AP ratios, and he no longer scales his health with his offensive stats. It's why I quit playing him. Maybe I'm just not good enough or whatever, but I don't recommend it.

FalconPawwwwnch3 votes

is this a joke lol

Jax has a .6 AP ratio on 3 second CD empower, .6 AP on Q, .7 AP on every ult proc, and a .2 AP to MR ratio on his ult, how are those not good ratios

Sachabot1 votes

Because he deals magic damage as a secondary source, so investing in the items to make them worthwhile in the endgame requires a full commitment to the high-end AP items. While this is technically a sound strategy, the hybrid items just don't deliver on the same level, and we're talking about hybrids, so.....

I guess I should be more specific, as you are correct and his ratios are decent: His AP ratios aren't high enough to make the trade-off worthwhile when building hybrid versus building the meta build.

KogMaw works great with this. Gunblade is actually quite strong on him, and triforce is of course standard. Its jsut maybe a bit clumsy since kog usually is either adc or mid, meaning full ad or full ap. XinZhao can go this direction also Jayce

Gunblade Jax is really good if you are ahead already. Problem is you can't afford to build it when your team is losing since Jax is very squishy then after his hp nerfs. Irelia honestly is not good as hybrid she only has 2 AP ratios but Akali, Jax and Kayle can make use of hybrid items such as Gunblade, Rageblade etc.

Evelynn Jax KogMaw TwistedFate Kayle

^ These are all champions that make the best usage out of hybrid-damage builds, mainly due to the fact that they either have auto attacks that scale well with AD+AP, have scaling attack speed or AS steroids, or both.

-Evelynn's Q and E both scale with AD+AP, and due to Q being a rapid-cast magic dmg ability, this allows her to build in more unique ways.

-Jax is pretty much the trope-namer for Hybrid-carries, due to his S1/S2 legacy. Unfortunately, various nerfs (to both his durability and his mana costs) he's not as strong as he used to be, but you can still pull some good stuff off with him, as he can still scale really well into late-game.

-Kog'maw is capable of some serious damage output no matter how you build him, due to his nature as a hyper-carry. Gunblade and Triforce are pretty good items on him. And since his W not only gives him massive range, but also %max HP shred that scales him AP on hit, this gives him a variety of build paths.

-Twisted Fate can be built either Burst-AP with Q and W, Sustain-AP/AS with maxing E, ADC with lots of attack speed to shred peoples' health down (BotRK and Runaan work especially well here), or you can build him as a Hybrid/AS split-pusher, though this route risks putting you in a lot more danger in teamfights and is more suited solely for taking down Turrets and minion waves.

-Kayle's E allows her to have 525 attack range for a certain amount of time (with 30%+ CDR you can have it up all the time) and gives her AP splash damage as well. Her Q also scales with both AD and AP, and her passive gives Armor and MR shred on hit up to 15%. This is what allows her to go hybrid if she wishes.

Akali - I know she has hybrid scaling in her abilities, but the thing about all that is that her Bonus AD only benefits her with two things: a meager spell-vamp bonus, and meager scaling on her E. Really the only hybrid item worth building on Akali is Gunblade, and has always been that way ever since her release. Going pure AP gives her more damage overall, mainly due to the fact that her ability cooldowns are so short that it's practically both burst AND sustained damage... x'D

One word about a specific champion:

Ezreal - So, this guy has both AD and AP scaling (a near equal amount on his abilities infact), but I wouldn't build Hybrid on him. The nature of Ezreal's kit means that he should be building either straight-up AD or straight-up AP. He's versatile in the regard that he can choose which damage type to build, but needs to stick that choice to remain effective.
