Why is the mana regen lower than that of most mana items...

Average champion has 800 mana at 18 and 20mp/5 regen

Athene provides +50% regen and +2% max/5

Aka on an average champion with no mana items, it provides about 25mp/5

The average +100% mp/5 item provides 20mp/5

So Athene technically still provides more mp/5 than any other item... its just that...

I rather not pay 600 more for 25 more MR and 20 less AP

Missing mana, not max mana.

20 mp/5 regen on your average champion = 500 missing mana.

Now, what would happen if said champion bought some form of extra mana, like, a Lichbane? He'd still have half of his mana pool left after casting for 500, getting that sweet 20 Mp5.

Using the 334 (+50) mana growth (Ahri, Annie, LeBlanc, Lux, Syndra, Orianna, Zyra, Ziggs).
Mana regen formula is 6 (+0.8). Standard for all casters (except Lissandra).
100 Mana is equal to 1MP5 at 50% Mana. As a reminder, base stats are now calculated from level 1.

With the new interaction with mana, Chalice should probably build out of a Sapphire Crystal instead of a Null-magic Mantle.

The Chalice is not working at the moment. It's bugged. It was supposed to get buffed .5% mana regen, but now it is much less than before. I just hope Riot took note of the bug reports.

It was bugged in 4.20 and was restoring 1.5% Missing mana per second (7.5% missing mana per 5). 4.21 fixed the bug and changed it to 2% missing mana per 5.

So they lied in the patch notes saying it was 1.5 per 5 being raised to 2 per 5. Are you sure it was 1.5% every second? Too bad it's still overpriced as fuck compared to the alternatives.

I tested it once when the bug was first reported and it was indeed 1.5% per second.

I've heard rumors that it had been hotfixed during the patch cycle, but I never bothered testing it myself.
