Looking for suggestions on supports to play

A quick background on me, I am currently a Gold 2 support main who has been playing a lot of ranked recently. I want to try and make it into Platinum but my champion pool is very small at the moment. I mostly play support Sion with the occasional Thresh Blitzcrank or Karma thrown in. While I have been doing very well with Sion thus far, I really would like to expand my champion pool.

So I wanted to ask if anyone would be willing to give me some advice on champions to play as well as how to play them and possible builds.

Also another quick question, mostly to see what others think. If you choose a support like Velkoz or Brand should you build mostly AP or go mostly support items?

Leona Soraka TahmKench Alistar are all really good picks for a support champion. Especially Leona and Soraka. Also, if you do go an AP support, I would recommend at least grabbing SS item first

Rakan is epic as a support and feels really satisfying to play. Zilean can be an excellent support too, but is probably one of thr most difficult to learn. The problem is that he isnt that strong without any cdr. And if the enemy adc has a powerful projectile ultimate like ezreal and lucian: pick braum. Nothing is more satisfying than covering your entire team by blocking lucians entire ultimate (really good vs varus Q too)

On AP Mage Supports Brand Zyra you're going to want to pick up damage after Eye. Just the nature of what they are.

I would look into Rakan, Nautilus, Morgana, and Braum as well. Each fills a certain niche. Rakan is all kinds of fun to play, especially with a good carry/team.

You are like me. Play Sion Bard for lane bullying and kill secure. Play Thresh and Blitz if you believe your team can win a fight once you pull an enemy out of position. So no faith in team = Tank Bard and Sion. Faith in team = Hook em and book em.

braum is a nice tank. sona is a nice ap support with good utility . lux is also not a bad option .

as for ap supports like brand vel and zyra i'd say buy your main support item (make sure you have sightstone somewhere) and then buy ap/support mix. item 3116 isn't a bad option because of the slow and redemption gives you some mana regen, a heal, and it can do damage and you can use it when dead

Velkoz and Brand? I recommend watching on Twitch the stream done by Liquid Painless. He's one of the Challenger tier players who plays support regularly - and he has had quite a few nice long videos using both of those champs. (He uses Brand and Velkoz when leveling up smurfs often - as an added bonus, NEACY recommended too.) While I am recommending streams, I suggest that you also check out the Strategy Professor on Youtube, he's a plat/diamond support player who regularly reviews supports for climbing purposes.

Now back to Velkoz and Brand...

You build AP items on Velkoz and Brand. For Brand, I like starting with the usual Spellthief route then go into Liandry's, Rylai's and Void Staff. For Velkoz, I like the approach that I've seen some challenger/master players (Painless, Budded, Hungry Like) have been using: start with Spellthief's route then Morello, Liandry's, Zhonyas, Banshee's, and Luden's. (Note how the builds for both Brand and Velkoz are quite similar, really.)

Now, let's look at champs which are best for climbing. Usually you can find those champs by asking whether they can rescue or improve adcs which are error-prone adcs (Janna, Sona, Soraka, Lulu, Tahm) or actually carry when the adc is really horrible (Bard, Zyra, Morgana, Brand, Velkoz). But in the end, it comes down to personal play style and how much you are willing to put up with as you climb.
