Season 5's Version Of Feral Flare

Jungle Itemization Jungle itemization has been overhauled – all existing jungle items have been removed. Hunter’s Machete

  1. Hunter’s Machete now grants 30 magic damage on hit over 2 seconds and grants 8 health and 2 Mana per second while fighting monsters.
  2. Hunter’s Machete can only be bought if you have Smite as a Summoner Spell. Upgrades Hunter’s Machete now upgrades into 4 items that amplify or change your Smite ability – depending on what overarching Jungle Strategy you want to do: Gank, Invade, Fast Clear, or Counterjungle

Stalker’s Blade

  1. After killing 3 monsters, you can smite Teemo enemy champions, dealing a small amount of true damage and reducing their movement speed by 50% for 2 seconds.

Poacher’s Knife

  1. Upgrade Smite to Quick Smite. Quick Smite has reduced cooldown – has further reduced cooldown when you kill large monsters and grants bonus gold if you use it on the monsters in the enemy jungle.

Skirmisher’s Saber

  1. Upgrades Smite to Challenging Smite. Challenging Smite can be cast on an enemy champion – doing no true damage but revealing them for a long time and causing your attacks to deal bonus true damage each time you hit him.

Ranger’s Trailblazer

  1. Upgrades Smite to Desolating Smite – which causes Smite to deal 50% splash damage to other nearby monsters as well as stun them for 1.5 seconds.

MOAR UPGRADES

The 4 above items can be enchanted with 4 enchantments that offer bonus statistics so you can customize the item based on what kind of role you want your jungler to transition to

Enchantment: Warrior

  • Grants AD and Life Steal

Enchantment: Magus

  • Grants AP and CDR

Enchantment: Juggernaut

  • Grants Health, CDR and Movement Speed

Enchantment: Slayer

  • Grants AS, CDR and a stacking AS buff

I'll begin by using an example champ who made great use of Feral Flare this season.

Feral Flare put Yi on the spotlight in season 4 jungle.

It seems to me that Flare would be best emulated via Machete > Poacher/Ranger > Slayer Enchantment.

It's the same idea. Speed up jungle clear, farm till you can get that attack speed. Though, some attack damage seems to be lost in this equation.

What do you think?

For Champs like Yi who utilize Flare, I'm debating Stalker for the R + Smite combo for the slow and ganks, Skirmisher for the same combo, but more true damage proc in fights, or the Poacher/Ranger for clear time and farm (depending on the unspecified values of these items).

I'd assume that the Slayer Enchantment would be his best bet for the AS + CDR But, ultimately, i'm wondering if Yi will be viable at all for season 5.

My best bet would be to take Hunter's Machete -> either Poacher or Ranger (depending on which would give faster cleartime) -> Slayer Enchantment to replicate the similar farm-early-wreck-later playstyle Yi offers.

As far as the carry jungle item, I would say Skirmisher with the warrior or slayer enchantment. Of course this probably won't change the fact that people will still whine about Yi because they don't deal with him properly. -_-

The only issue right now is that you NEED either poacher or raider because it is almost impossible to clear with out either the AOE damage or the reduced cool down (It doesn't even reduce very much, since they nerfed the base cool down back up to 60 seconds, from live's 40 seconds) the ganking smite is ok except since it requires you to clear to use it while giving you horrendous clear speed and survivability, it is kind of a moot upgrade imo. The one for invading is outclassed by both the AOE and reduced cool down ones, since the best way to counter jungle/invade is when you don't even interact with the enemy junglier, especially considering how brutally the jungle will crush you atm.

Don't forget, this is PBE, numbers are subject to change.

which is why it is the problem right now, not forever and always.

The more I think about it,

Hunter's > Skirmisher > Slayer

seems like the way to go.

Um I thought Slayer would be stacking like rageblade (in combat) not like feral flare (from farm)

Either way, it should make Yi even more viable.

When I was jungling with Yi and got behind, because counter jungle or lanes loosing to much, I sometimes had trouble turning wiggles into flare.

So farming jungle in S4 was always a gamble, either you finish or you don't. With these new items farming will always get you ahead one step at a time.

And as you said, there are even several options available now.

it will stack like rage blade, and it also has another component that the notes missed, it deals 24 magic damage on hit... to everything. There is no true perm stacking Flare-esque item in the new jungle anymore, but this is pretty close to ho the live one works. The stacking AS buff makes up for not giving damage stacks on kill or assist.

Yes I should have been more clear.

I meant Slayer in the sense that it will stack AS on hits, not minion kills.

I can tell you right now, that I did the same thing on Nocturne in PBE. He is also a lot stronger with FF, so I went in and got Poachers and Slayer. The Quick Smite is nice, but Slayer =/= Feral Flare. It may have a stacking system where your attack speed goes up every time you attack, and have 24 bonus damage, but the damage never gets any higher, and doesn't proc on monsters. Lategame, the Gromp Buff will do more dps than your Enchantment on jungle monsters. It is an unfortunate truth, and all we can hope for is FF to return, as something where you decide for either faster clearing, or stronger smite.

That is rather unfortunate...

It was just this season that I began to jungle. Looks like everything's going out the window.
