The fact that Nexus towers are often downed by Super Minions before Champions probably bothers me most of all. As a last line of defense, you'd think those turrets would actually do something significant against minions aside from Health Regen.

Towers in general are awful. The least they should do by late game is deal with minions waves appropriately. I understand when champions become super powerful that turrets should not last long against a group. However, when it's early to midgame and turrets can be ignored because J4/Vi wanted to gank you, there's a problem.

because J4/Vi wanted to gank you

And Lee.

It's a holy trinity of bruiser junglers.

Dehorn2 votes

watching lee walk under tower lvl 6 with no minions or items, kill someone with over half hp, and walk out is disgusting. that should never happen

IcyPepper2 votes

That's assassins in general, not even just tanks. :c

And yes, Lee is a secondary assassin. Late-game, he's almost never built like one, but when it comes to early game he definitely has the kit of one.

I concur, I am very stern on myself to map awareness so I always make sure if no team member is watching minion waves destroying towers (almost as much as champions in some games even though they are not going for objectives really) I am every time. (Gets me gold and exp anyway...and some games people dont care to protect towers)

Monkey D Luffy3 votes

exactly, if super minions destroy the nexus towers then it's the fault of people.

I'm really fucking tired of being 85% health and having a level 6 leona with no items lock me down under turret for 5 seconds then Vayne condemning me into the turret and killing me, all while Leona is just standing there moaning in pleasure as the turret is caressing her for like 3% of her health every 2 seconds.

Don't get me started on the lategame where Volibear's health regen passive restores health faster than he is damaged by both nexus turrets.

qetzel2 votes

If super minions were unable to take a Nexus tower, taking an inhibitor would be almost worthless. Why would you do it? It would just give you a high health minion for a siege, which is really difficult to do against two turrets.

They haven't been feared in years. They weren't feared in the assassin metas, they weren't feared in poke/siege metas, they weren't feared in big teamfight metas, they weren't feared when bruisers were prevalent, they weren't feared when tanks were on top.

When were they to be feared? Early Season 1?

early season 1 towers didn't even have armor pen. morello made a joke about how frozen heart had a passive that let you ignore turrets

Anidan14 votes

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. So basically, towers have never been feared.

Thanks for the clarification there.

They were feared in Season 2 when we still had the summoner spell "Fortify". Which made them invulnerable and gave them twice the AS. If you managed to stun an assassin with tower aggro, AND had this summoner spell - he was dead. Plus the whole spell was global, so you could clutch save turrets/enemies being dived without having to be there.

Nothing like being ripped by a tower for a bad mistake ;)

I watch all these pro assassin mid laners 60-0 someone under turret in lane and just walk away taking no more than about two shots. Most people are screaming OMG WOW OUTPLAYED, and I'm just thinking Is this what mid lane has come to? Backing every time you're at 60%?

Squarefighter7 votes

You mean literally never? Towers haven't suffered a single nerf compared to what they were in S4, and the inhib and nexus turrets do a lot more after about a second or two. Everyone just likes to complain and compare the to a different set of towers that never existed.

Lockenster8 votes

nostalgia is blind my friend

YCitizenSnipsY3 votes

Some times I think these complaints are insinuating that towers are useless because they are not a 100% safety net for dives. I get that they have to be useful but they shouldn't just outright save you if they enemy team made the effort for a multi man dive or that you are loosing lane so bad that the enemy laner can afford to gamble on a dive.

Also I think people hate winions.

I have tried DOtA 2 like 4 or 5 times and gave up because I didn't like it. But I noticed that the turrets were really scary. Super rapid shots and super long range and super high champion priority D:

Sightless6619 votes

Towers aren't scary in Dota 2. They're valued far more as teleportion points than for actual champion damage. A common piece of advice given to new players is that in League towers defend you, while in Dota you defend your towers. It only takes one time being 100-0 dived at 5 minutes by a nightstalker who takes less than 1/3 of his health for that lesson to sink in. Hell, when Spirit Breaker was in the meta I considered myself lucky if I didn't get dove by level 3.

The thing is, not only do Dota towers do less relative damage than League's because their damage doesn't increase with multiple hits, but their tower priority is actually really easy to mess with too. They'll only hit you if you attempt to right click someone. Nuke someone with a spell? Tower doesn't give a shit. Walk up to them intending to murder them? Tower couldn't care less. Even once you've taken aggro, dropping it is as easy as trying to attack one of your own minions. It resets the tower's aggro when you do that, so you can kill someone, a-click a minion, and then walk away.

Basically, Dota's towers are only scary until you realize just how little damage they do and how easily circumvented they are. Then it's dive city.

gatchi10 votes

holy shit i had no idea. the things you learn on the league forums....

Yeah I bet it is because I didn't understand its mechanics. I just felt that way. I see now.

That (and the OP for that matter) probably has a lot more to do with you being inexperienced and not knowing how to deal with towers over them actually being strong.

In DotA: tower damage can be almost completely ignored via evasion, damage absorption, or just health regeneration. On most melee champions - you get 1 solid tanky item comparable to something like Frozen Mallet and the towers in DotA stop being scary. With squish - you can get 200% life steal on a single item, and the major armor penetration item reduces tower armor.

Also - towers in DotA use generic WC3 AI, which goes like this: Attack the closest thing attacking you. If nothing's attacking you, attack the closest enemy.

It's not particularly difficult to tower-dive someone in DotA and take 0 damage after pushing a minion wave to the tower. More irritating soloing a tower as a melee because it will target you before your ranged minions, but towers aren't very frightening there.

Comrade Napoleon1 votes

Actually one of the first things i noticed when i switched from DOTA (the first one) to League was "damn those turrets are really strong!" That was back in S1, not sure what changed now

Gorgannan4 votes

You got good. I've only been playing since S2, but they haven't gotten any weaker. People move up in skill and realize that a 2 or 3 man dive is easily coordinated.

If you want a scary tower, play twisted treeline. The nexus tower is hilarious. It can kill paper champs in about 2 seconds. Maybe swap the summoners rift nexus towers with this little badass.

RasCaelestis1 votes

My first experience with that thing was hilarious. I, a full-tank Cho'Gath, and my ally Irelia had gotten an ACE on the enemy team, then proceeded to steamroll an Inhibitor tower and the inhibitor. I tanked the Inhib one while she melted it. I was at about 75% HP and she was about 50% HP when we got to the Nexus turret. We planned to do the same strategy on the Nexus tower. Irelia was a bit faster than me, and aggro'd the tower first. She wasn't as tanky as me, but based on the way teamfights had been going, could definitely tank a decent amount of damage from champions. This turret was no champion though... She took maybe three shots, then died. I took one shot, got chunked, then booked it as fast as I could. Irelia said "wtf??" in /All chat, since neither of us expected it. I don't think the enemy team saw it coming either, since there was a lot of "LOOOOOL", "Dat damage", etc. from them. Ever since then, we've always made sure to have a full minion wave before even thinking about going for that turret.

People keep saying "They need to buff turrets!!!" without realizing what this means. Turrets aren't some magical object in the game that's suppose to protect you from dying to a 3 or 4 man tower dive. It's not suppose to save you if you choose to stick around with low HP, it's not suppose to save you if you are a squishy and an incredibly fed enemy dives you and kills you. It's also not suppose to 1v5 the incredibly ahead enemy team and stall out the game until you can come back. They're fine as they are and provide adequate protection at low levels. The only thing I would be in favor of is reducing the baron HP buff on minions since it makes them so tanky, and it's almost too easy to take turrets if you get the baron buff and siege.

Xonra4 votes

The old Morde, back around season 1/2 used to be able to near infinitely tank towers by putting on his shield and just attacking, since his passive shield was so much stronger than it is now.

I can't remember a time when towers were ever anything to fear, I just remember a time when people used to have much less game and strategy sense and were scared to get near them.

Very different thing.

Silents4293 votes

I have never witnessed a time period they were ever something to fear.

Sozan53 votes

No, even Pepperidge Farm doesn't remember that.

Regardless, I think that turrets could use some buffs, mostly to their durability though - not their damage.

  • Every turret except outer ones are squishy as hell (compared to when you are supposed to destroy them). Their health should be buffed to:

  • Outer: 1000 (+200 per enemy champion in game), for a total of 2000 health on summoners rift (no change)

  • Inner: 1300 (+300 per enemy champion in game), for a total of 2800 health on summoners rift (from 2300)

  • Inhibitor: 1500 (+300 per enemy champion in game), for a total of 3000 health on summoners rift (from 2000)

  • Nexus: 1500 (+350 per enemy champion in game), for a total of 3250 health on summoners rift (from 2500)

  • Inhibitor and Nexus turrets should get 10 armor, magic resist and 5 health regen for every allied champion within 1095 range of them.

This wouldn't change dives at all, but would make defending the base slightly easier as it wouldn't fall apart in seconds - especially true for inhibitor turrets (which for some reason are more squishy than inner ones).

MONKÈY3 votes

This is probably the only buff to turrets that'd be possible. I mean, consider the following: If we even touched the turret's damage, attack speed, or range the effects could drastically effect the game because that means they would interact with minions differently. Set up a custom game with no one in it and enter no lane. You'll notice that, interestingly enough, turrets tend to fall randomly. Imagine if we upped a turret's attack to buff them, and it got to a point where lane minions could not /ever/ take a tower, or at least, take them a very long time. That means that basically a champion would have to do it. And that means the game would either be snowballier, because a lane would have to be dominated to lose it's tower - more so than now - or solely dependent on a team having good rotations.

However, to address increasing the health of towers in general, I feel like that would only increase the length of games. I mean, when the whole enemy team is under a tower, you're likely not taking it and a fight would be risky so the health isn't really needed. However, at about 40 minutes death timers get big, which makes me wonder - would you be able to take the nexus towers after you ace them in there base? If the answer is no, then that's horrendous, because I feel like there's a point in every game where one team is just not going to win and they decide how long they want the team to drag out for both teams. I'm just not so sure if it'd really help teams get back into the game or just make games longer.

i remember when maokai danced under inhib towers for the entire duration of his ult without dying. i don't think people really do remember. yeah the damage is equalized to where it shreads squishys slower but tanks can no longer tank tover for more than 5 seconds before lazer kills you no matter how you build.

I remember back in the day I was Cho'gath and I tanked the inhib turret and the turret before in the middle of a team fight for a solid 30 seconds, and then continued tanking it after the team fight to let my team kill the turrets and walked off with a 1/4th of my life left after both turrets were dead.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Because a 1v1 dive should always work. When you're low and hiding behind your turret, the enemy should easily be able to dive you and kill you without missing CS.

Slamurai Jack2 votes

I'm pretty sure they actually buffed towers substantially in season 4 if I remember correctly. They charge up faster than they used to, pretty sure, and going invisible no longer drops tower aggro.

They could make the last 2 towers like really OP against minions but not champs (same like now)
