Why Ori needs a buff

Warning: Im only Silver so I'm probably wrong about 90% of this, but I would like your opinion on what I have to say and what you think about her. This is mainly focused around early game Ori. Since she doesn't hit a power spike until mid to late game. (edit - please read the comments before commenting)

(edit - Okay I am being a silver noob; how about a movement speed and aa range buff, because come on, aren't those a little to low for how she has almost the lowest stat in almost every stat?)

Old idea

Ori is pretty damn strong late game I'll give you that. However doing anything damage wise from level 1-10 is a really difficult. She has below average range on aa's as well the lowest base AD. Yes she has her passive, but it make it difficult to get within aa range without being hit yourself a couple times. Plus her passive doesn't really shine until she has some Ap to back it up. Which is why she should get 575 range on aa and maybe an Attack Speed nerf. As well as 20-30% Ap scaling on passive. Since yes it stacks on damage, but you are usually dead before you can get a more than 6 aa's off, or they simply get out of range since she also has the lowest movement speed .

Movement Speed is another problem. She does have an aoe speed boost, but it's not even much of a boost with her very low base movement speed. Most enemies easily catch up with her. As well as it cost so much mana. It's not something you can just use in a pinch to get away after a fight since it has a fairly high cd and mana cost. So if the speed boost was higher or she was simply faster.

Then there's armor where she has the second lowest. Yes her e's passive gives her armor and mr. The problem is her ball has to be attached to her for it to be any good, again a problem since all her abilities revolve around that ball being placed ON THE MAP. So if she got a different passive such she gains the bonus no matter what as well as who ever it's attached to.

As for her q and w damage. They're both just sad at level 1. So you have to place 2 in each by level 5 or you literally barely scratch anyone. One way to fix it would be to make the base damage higher or scaling. Such as her q yes has a 4.5 second cd at level 3 that's not exactly something you can spam, which is what that damage is made for. Her w is pretty weak for how hard it is to hit. You Because he ball has a fairly slow missile speed most enemies aren't there when it gets there. Obviously you plan ahead, but it doesn't always go as planed and you miss 2 abilities and a lot of mana. Making it hard to hit 100% of the time. So it needs 80% ap scaling.

As for her e (read stated above for other information) the shield is just meh and pretty weak compared to most of the shield out there. Its made to spam but doesn't have the cd to back that up, with a 9 sec cd. So it should have a 60% ap scaling.

As for her R, ehh. I like it where it's at. Decent damage for the huge aoe knock up. But it's as if they nerfed everything else on her just for that.

I think the thing you're missing is that her design makes her weak in lane, but a monster at any form of teamfight.

Not every champion needs to be Leblanc.

Smol Squash1 votes

Yes I do know that, but she is so incredibly weak thats she's fell behind with all the new champions that have came by and have been buffed. Its way to easy for an enemy to put pressure on her because she lacks damage and resulting in her losing lane.

Truly Prideful2 votes

Ori is able to go even in lane in most matchups. She can farm from a decent range and if she's using her shield well she can mitigate a lot of harass. She's also really scary to dive when she hits 6.

She's a lot better than you think.

Smol Squash1 votes

You may not believe me, but I do know all that. And yes you are very much correct. But she herself can't do much damage. Which is very frustrating when you have to keep qing to get farm then eing to block damage because if someone wants to put pressure on the other farming you just stand between them in farm, which would make her run out of mana very quickly. Especially early game.

Truly Prideful1 votes

That is her vulnerable point in the game. The second grouping for objectives starts, who is more useful to their team? The Ori who survived lane or the aggressive Leblanc / insert assassin here?

Her lane damage is fine for what she is meant to be. With practice it's easy to survive a majority of matchups with her. You don't need to always cs with Q, you should be doing it with her autos most of the time. You can save most of your mana for shield usage if the matchup is that abusive. In that situation though, your jungler should be getting involved.

Smol Squash1 votes

I do cs with my aa unless it's one I'm going to miss (obviously). But when I do play safe and only take the cs I can get then the assassin decides to roam. I ping. Team ignores, then dies.

Truly Prideful1 votes

That's on your team not paying attention as long as you're letting them know about the roam. That would happen to you on anyone like Ori, not just her. Laning well with Ori just takes a lot of practice. Once you're really solid with her, she can trade favorably with some of the assassins. Like I said, as long as you can get out of lane even or close then you've done your job. Now you're a monster and ready to go. Unfortunately for you you're having the solo queue problem where people pay no attention to assassin roams.

Smol Squash1 votes

Yep. That is a personal problem, but still should fit in to how she is pretty weak early.

Truly Prideful1 votes

No, she's just not as mobile as the roaming assassins. If they turned her into a powerful laner like you seem to think she needs to be, why pick anything else? Her teamfight is amazing, taking objectives when she defends them is extremely dangerous, and her scaling isn't even bad considering her utility.

The problem with giving her more AA range is she is already very good against melee and range buffs are the biggest buff you can give anyone. Especially on autoattacks and even more of a buff if you have a passive autoattack buff.

Movespeed buffs usually only happen for melee because ranged already have that range advantage. Giving more movespeed to ranged just makes them even worse to deal with for melee and I doubt it would do anything to help the situation you're having trouble with. If you feel like you really need to follow roams to stop them early, you could try running teleport. Ori is played with a defensive summoner quite often anyway.

Smol Squash1 votes

Her aa range is less than most of the mages out there.Buffing it would help with the poke so you dont have to get so close and if they do jump on you, then you're a lot close to the tower to retreat.

As for her movement speed. She basically screwed if she doesn't see them coming. Since she has no escape.

Truly Prideful1 votes

Her AA range is shorter because she has a shield to trade with. 525 is actually pretty average for a lot of the AP mids. Like I've said, she doesn't need / deserve more trading power. Her power once teams group up is just so high that her lower kill power in lane is justified.

This one is solved by wards. Warding up on Ori is pretty important since you only really care about making it through lane. Get that pink ward first buyback and place it defensively on your side, green ward the other side and then you'll have everything in front of you that you need to see. This is pretty much the life of any of the teamfighting mages.

Smol Squash1 votes

I see what you mean now. I guess I'll start to play more passively and only attack to punish their mistakes.

Lao Fu the Tiger1 votes

You're describing Nasus .

Does he need a buff as well?

Smol Squash1 votes

I wouldn't know. Never played him. Im no pro or anything, or even been playing this game that long. Ori I have been playing for about 6 months for 60-70% of my games. You have most likely been playing her longer and know more, but I am sharing what I feel is wrong with her.

Lao Fu the Tiger2 votes

Ohohohoh I see. I get where you're coming from then.

I'm silver as well, but I've done a ton of research and thinking into design, so from a knowledge standpoint I feel I can help out a bit.

Basically, some champions are intentionally designed with very very weak laning phases specifically because their late game potential is monstrous. It's possible to make sure these champions never become relevant by shutting them down in lane, but if they merely survive lane, and not even win lane, then late game they can be very strong.

Nasus is one of these characters. He will never win lane. He's not designed to. He just needs to farm until he becomes a monster.

Kog'maw is another one. As displayed by Incarnati0n, he does extraordinarily well in teamfights late game poking down the enemy. All he had to do was not feed and farm.

Orianna is the same. She most likely won't win lane, you're right. She won't have much kill pressure. Her kit's design allows her to farm safely from a distance, and then eventually, when she has a couple items and teamfights roll around, she can do a lot of damage. Her primary goal early on in the game is to get as much CS as possible and not die. That's it.

Smol Squash1 votes

Well there's this problem - But she herself can't do much damage. Which is very frustrating when you have to keep qing to get farm then eing to block damage because if someone wants to put pressure on the other farming you just stand between them in farm, which would make her run out of mana very quickly. Especially early game. Because they do 50% more damage than you.

Oh yeah. She is a late game beast. It's just getting to late game without falling behind is pretty difficult.

Wickedfates2 votes

u try her in support role.... the thought process is a lil diff but its fun.... just something to try maybe yes?

Smol Squash1 votes

I have and yeah it can be fun. Mostly when you don't have an adc thats scared of his own shadow.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Orianna is perfectly fine as long as you manage her mana costs properly. She's not supposed to be a huge lane bully; don't spam everything on cooldown and you'll be fine until you can make use of her massive teamfight potential.

Smol Squash1 votes

But she needs the damage to deal back when she get pressured in lane. Because if you poke them for half the damage they deal to you who do you think wins the lane (sorry if I came off as rude)

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Depends on the matchup, for the most part. Gotta change up your playstyle if your opponent can easily out-trade you.

Smol Squash1 votes

Yes, but then you are forced to farm with q. Then e to shield the constant pressure. Which uses up mana very fast. Especially early game.

thats the point tho she has a weaker lane phase for how strong her teamfight is, it keeps her balanced and i like it that way

I can list at least 20 champs with better AOE than Orianna. Her teamfight is really not that good. And you forget it's a skillshot. Meanwhile we have champions like Annie who just walk up to your team and burst (and stun) everyone. If Orianna lands her skillshot she should be rewarded. She takes more skill than most of the point and click mages we currently have.

Smol Squash1 votes

You're sort of right. She is one of the best teamfight champions. With her giant knock up and shield. But you are definitely right about if she lands it she should be rewarded.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Orianna isn't really meant to be strong early game. She can harass and bully melee champions in lane and trade fairly well against ranged champions with her E and autoattacks, but she isn't meant to be a strong laner.

Orianna is a mid-game and teamfight monster when properly played, providing fantastic (follow-up) initiation, utility (shield, MS buff/slow, displacement), and high consistent damage (low CD Q and passive-enhanced autoattacks). She is fantastic at following up initiators and at grouping enemies for AoE damage.

She doesn't really have many horrible match-ups and can hold her own enough to farm in most of them. You shouldn't be focused on killing your enemy early game unless they make a mistake; you are better off prioritizing farming up your items to secure a strong mid- to late-game.

Smol Squash1 votes

I dont want her to be so much as strong early. Just not pathetically weak. As for bully melee. Most of them have gap closers about 50% larger than your aa range. Then enough burst to take you down or wound you enough to need to back. While at most you can get them 50% down.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

She isn't pathetically weak early. However, she isn't a champion built for early dominance; Orianna typically wants to farm early so she can get her items to secure a strong mid-game. There aren't a lot typical midlaners who can match Orianna for DPS and utility late-game, so it makes sense that she isn't a dominant laner as a trade-off.

You shouldn't be in a position where melee champions can easily fight you anyways. While some of them can beat Orianna in the early levels, they have to jump onto her to do so (unless you misposition). If they jump into you, you can easily shield some of the damage and kite them backwards through your minions, then chase them with autoattacks when they try to back off. Creep damage is very strong early and you can easily harass them with your autoattacks when they try to CS. You should be able to win most trades against melee champions if you properly position and use your minions.

If you are having trouble playing Orianna, it might be a good idea to watch some professional players use her and see how they handle the matchups you seem to be having trouble with. I find that Bjergson and Scarra provide good advice for their champions.

Im no pro or anything, or even been playing this game that long. Ori I have been playing for about 6 months for 60-70% of my games. But this is where my problem lies. I can teamfight very well. Csing is something I still need to get used to since I always hit like 10-15 health too soon. You are right and I may do that.. Well then how about a movement speed and aa range buff, because come on, aren't those a little to low for how she has almost the lowest stat in almost every stat?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Her base stats really aren't that bad considering how strong her kit is. Her kite compensates for most of her base stats anyways.

Her passive makes up for her low base AD and her E-passive makes up for her low armor.

Her base health at level 1 is on the low end, it's only really in the lower third. You have good health regen and a shield as well, which helps you keep your health up.

Her movement speed is low, but her W helps her roam and kite/chase during fights.

FooDang1 votes

I see your problem from your match history...you need to max W first and don't get seraphs embrace... Complains about Ori early game...gets a tear...logic right lol

Smol Squash1 votes

I get that tear alrighty

FooDang1 votes

http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-history/NA1/207343697?champion=61&map=1

That one is more accurate...who cares about twisted treeline? Also you build rod of ages? Another late game item? And complain about her early game...

Smol Squash1 votes

Well I build that when I'm against AD. Soo. Yeah. Since Athens won't help much. If you look when I get Rod I rush Zhona's

FooDang1 votes

I'm just saying Ori is fine...you complain about her early game (which is fine) and build late game items...the logic lol

Smol Squash1 votes

Athene's is a late game item...this logic lol

FooDang1 votes

Yea...Athene's...that's what I was talking about... /Sarcasm

Smol Squash1 votes

My normal build. Sometimes replaces the liandry's with Ludens.
