How to handle Range as a Melee?

Vensaval··2 votes·655 views

Just looking for some general advice. Can go for any lane.

One of my biggest weaknesses in this game is that I tend to have a lot of difficulty facing ranged champs as melee characters. Whether it be mid, top, or even as a Support, I have trouble figuring out what the proper approach is to playing efficiently without being harassed to much.

On a related note: My other big weakness is my habit of regularly (not always) following and backing up my teammates regardless of how ridiculous their decisions are. Which is why I believe Braum meshes so well with me and has become my favorite champ.

Honestly there is no perfect way to handle a melee vs ranged match up, which is why a lot of top lane tanks have fallen from the meta. The best thing you can do is to just stand back out of range of harrass and then when you see a minion get low then approach it so that as soon as u get there its ready to be last hit. If you go too soon and u wait for a second to last hit, your giving your opponent time to harrass you. Another thing is to bring lots of HP pots or a Flask if you are mana based. Generally you dont take a dorans blade if you know you're going to be harrassed out of lane.

Depends on the melee. Ones like Irelia and Fiora has low CD dashes to get in, some just abuse sustain like Nasus and Maokai, and some can cheese like Yi and Try.

Fizz and shyvana can move around quite well. Jax isn't too shabby either. But ya CDR and slow actives or move speed actives help a lot.

Similar to yi, olaf can pop ghost and ult.

Another nice option is some one like garden who can usually try to reach the adc riskk free since he can press w to mitigate damage. Then activate randuins omen for slow. And continue or run away

Then there's Vi , if you can manage to play her without any shame/ or losing you diginity. Her ult guarantees you'll reach the ADC.

The way you deal with ranged is by not touching the minion wave. Let the enemy push. Melee champs usually have good last hit capabilities (Kassadin W, Fizz W). If you begin to auto attack the minions mindlessly then you're going to make it harder for yourself to keep track of minion HP.

Generally minions attack the nearest unit. So focus on last hitting the melee minions when they're low and use abilities to finish off any casters that are low.

It depends on the lane and the champion.

Mid lane and top lane melee vs ranged matchups, you usually want to let the enemy push and last hit under your turret, although with some melees you can still lane normally and trade fairly well, with Zed being a good example (albeit extremely broken example) for the mid lane, and Sion being a fairly good example in the top lane.

Some melee mid and top laners find it difficult to farm under turret, and find it a lot easier to trade with the enemy laner through base damages and sustain. Irelia is a good example of this in the top lane.

As a support melee, you can back off a bit more than a melee in the other lanes because you don't have to CS outside of proccing the Shield passive on Relic Shield and its upgrades. Instead, you can focus more on making smart engages with your ADC and protecting your ADC when the opposing bot lane engages.

Hope ghostcrawler goes to ruin the range-melee balance of another game.
