Ryze needs a rework or changes to his current kit.

Ryze benefits from building AP, Mana, Health, and defense. Ironically, most of his core items build all of these.

I'd say the items themselves are the problem, but ever since Riot introduced Smart-Casting, or whatever the heck they call it now, his burst has become insanely easy. You can actually get it off during that .75 rank 1 Rune Prison. To top it all off, his cool downs are rarely expired. So how do you fight someone who has;

-A Snare (.75-1.75 seconds) -Magic Resist reduction (12-24) -A Nuke that is up 90-100% of the time. -Free cool down reduction on the nuke, which you level up first. -Able to get damage from Mana and Ability Power. -A 80 flat movement speed steroid. -50% damage AoE damage with all his spells. -Free spell vamp. -A passive that keeps his abilities constantly refreshing. Especially after getting Frozen Heart or another CDR item.

The mobility from his ult needs to be reverted to what it was and nerfed. Say 20/40/60 flat movement speed for the duration of his ult. Not a flat 80 at all ranks. Or better yet, just give his ult a passive instead. Ryze gains x amount of % movement speed whenever he hits a target with spells or a basic attack. He loses the bonus while his ult is on cool down.

The magic resist debuff needs to be nerfed at earlier ranks. Similar to how you nerfed Kog'maw's Q. Targets hit have their magic resist reduced by 5/10/15/20/25. There's no reason he should get 12 reduction at rank one.

Give him a new passive instead of his current one. He shouldn't have 100% up-time on his skills and a very short cool down on his burst. Otherwise, his damage needs to be reduced.

There's probably a lot more wrong with him than what I mentioned, but it's what I've noticed that is frustrating about playing against him. Especially the addition of smart cast.

Every champion has abilities that do things, and an intuitive user interface not being clunky also tends to benefit a wide range of champions.

Putting forth a laundry list of qualities is quite frankly a terrible argument, as you can apply it to every champion in the game.

Example:

Urgot is the most OP champion in the game! How do you fight a champion with:

  • Suppression, one of the best types of CC in the game
  • The capacity to drag you under towers and in the middle of a team
  • Point-click nukes with 1200 range.
  • A point-click nuke with 100% up-time
  • A 900 range AoE blast that causes him to essentially have 1200 range auto-attacks
  • the ability to reduce your damage against him by 15%. With his auto-attacks, or 1200 range attacks.
  • An 80-280 HP shield that causes his auto-attacks and missiles to slow targets. (Shen's Feint and Lee Sin's Safeguard only grant 220/200 HP by comparison).
  • A 120 armor and magic resistance steroid. Leona's Eclipse only offers 60.
  • Free 20% armor shred that applies to allied damage.

Honestly - if you're going to complain about a champion, don't complain about literally every aspect of them.

You cease arguing about a trade off and balance of power when you just put forth a laundry list, and it makes your argument seem more fueled by hatred and loathing than it does reason.

Stick to one thing about a champion you find out of whack. Acknowledge they have strengths you're OK with. But stick to one aspect of the champion - not their itemization/abilities.

Because all I'm getting from your post is you lost to a Ryze and need to vent.

I support a Ryze rework, but this post was on the money.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly.

I do think Ryze is too punishing early game for how strong he becomes late game. Would like to see some counterplay in his laning phase beyond coordinated ganks and picking a counterpick. I think one factor in his power is that he isn't heavily weakened by the tear. Most champs sacrifice early power with a Tear for late game prowess (the Tear's upgrades are very efficient). Because Ryze scales extremely well with mana not just due to his ratios but his spammable abilities as well, he has only a very brief dip in power with the Tear before ramping up his almost unmatched power curve.

One idea: Give his ult the Olaf treatment. His abilities are made relatively weak without his ult. This places a control on him in lane as well as late game. When he activates ult, his tankiness drops but his damage skyrockets. He now has counterplay in lane by playing around his ult, and late game he isn't so abusive. This also helps streamline his power spikes, which I believe is necessary because hyper carries are notorious for being unhealthy for the game--they either can't be played at all, or they are extremely dominant.

Keep in mind that is a very short ranged mage and can be easily shut down, because of his lack of a quick escape (would you take ghost over flash on an adc?). In fact, once he uses rune prison, he has to walk closer for maximum damage.

His passive cannot be changed, because he is a dps mage. He needs his spells to be on a low cooldown to deal consistent damage, and he needs to deal enough damage and move fast enough to compensate for his lack of range.

Also, smart cast has always existed; it just wasn't obvious.

I don't have a problem with numbers but I have a problem with his simplicity to his kit without any real meaningful weakness. I would like riot to give the similar treatment to what they did with Lucian.

Immobility and short range are pretty meaningful weaknesses to have these days.

I could say the same with nasus but he just scales and be a late game monster.

An immobile, short range late game monster.

He is manageable as is so he isn't likely super high on the list, since he is an original he also need to be handled carefully as it will make fans mad no matter what but a failed rework would be a huge headache.

I honestly wouldn't mind never seeing Ryze again. He counters everything except %damage tanks.

Thanotos Omega2 votes

That is one opinion, remember the players are still complaining about replacing Nasus's voice with a guy who didn't sound out the word "Continues" they aren't all that reasonable.

Well, at least my opinions are grounded on actual gameplay and not a voiceover. I could be doing a lot worse in the complaints department. Haha.

True, but he isn't some insane monster who has no counter play, he can't stop anyone from attacking him he's also supposed to be allot of bang for the buck he is meant to help new players face more experienced ones on even footing, so it's hard to get him in a place where his ease of use doesn't hurt his power,

While I agree he should remain simple, the fact he's seeing competitive play and is going top lane (versus going mid, where he was originally intended to go) means that he's far tankier and deals too much damage to begin with. The fact he is ranged is enough of a horror for top lane. But you combine insane damage (seriously, smart cast with Ryze is your whole combo in 1-2 seconds) against a single target and you combine that with his mobility, cc, and debuffs. No. Ryze is, heh, Overload-ed.

As far as a beginner champ goes, I mean. Look at Ashe. She won't see any form of rework or buffs because she's a 'beginner' champ. But is that because she's an ADC? Annie got a lot of changes and she's beginner. But Garen has had no meaningful changes to make him better and he's top lane. Why should Ryze get to build tanky and still wreck because his tanky items give his abilities damage? That is not a beginner type champion. He's at least intermediate.

That isn't what it means at all. Ryze has been reworked several times. Where he stands today(short ranged DPS mage that scales with mana) was intended to put him In the top lane. He used to be a burst mage, and horribly strong at that. He had longer range, higher ap ratios and his ultimate used to give him flat ap bonus. He is balanced and fun to play. Look at one of his older kit versionshttp://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/V1.0.0.61
