Does Trundle seem too strong to anyone else?

Trundle

I'm curious to know the opinions of the community regarding our resident troll champion.

I play Trundle pretty frequently, particularly because he's a very simple champion with entertaining dialogue. However I find myself absolutely obliterating players when I play him as a jungler. Not that I mind, but he seems like he's just a bit too strong. Here's my reasoning:

  1. He synergizes very well with the "tank meta" that we're currently experiencing. Cinderhulk works wonders on him.

  2. He has very quick and very efficient camp clears. I attribute this to the low cooldown of Chomp and his passive, both of which mitigate the amount of damage received from jungle creeps as well as giving him improved base damage.

  3. His ultimate is a tank-breaker. Not only that, but it makes YOU the tank for the duration. 28% (max rank) of max health is a HUGE portion when compared to what other % max HP champions are running with. Sure it's not all immediate, but should the initial 12% (min rank) not completely destroy your victim's chances of winning a fight, the extra 8% as a DoT certainly will. On top of that, you get a stupid amount of armor and magic resist to cushion your already bulky bum.

  4. He SHREDS turrets. His Q does extra damage to turrets as an enhanced auto attack. However other champions don't seem to get this effect, why does he get it? Again, I don't mind this at all, I love it, but it makes him a very strong split pusher.

I understand that Trundle only has one hard cc ability and that puts him behind your regular true-blue tanks, but considering his ult is frequently available, should he use it on a tank, he then becomes equally tanky if not more so than the enemy tank. I feel he's too strong and that the only reason he's managed to sneak under the radar is because he's not a popular LCS pick.

Thoughts? Rage? Leave em below.

trundle is arguably the most balanced top laner. hes neither strong or weak, you just need to know how to lane against him and hes not that big of a deal.

As a Trundle main (check my history for the last several years):

"I play Trundle pretty frequently"

Not according to your LoLking profile which says your top five picks, in order, are Pantheon, Sejuani, Vi, Amumu, and Udyr. The recent history it shows (admittedly a few weeks back) shows you've played Shaco, Maokai, Darius, Volibear, and Singed.

So, here's what I see: You play tanks. Trundle is a tank buster. That's his kit. That's what he's designed to do. You probably lost to him recently and are frustrated. Well, let's talk about Trundle's weaknesses.

He does NOT have any hard CC. He has 0.1 second slow on his Bite (melee range attack), and his pillar does not stun or freeze an opponent ever, and blocks them if used properly probably about 15% of the time depending on the context and location of the fight.

Put simply: His ganking sucks.

Don't believe me? Even the devs think his ganking sucks. Go to google, type in "PBE news" and pull up the first site or two that comes up. They will go over recent PBE changes that they're testing, and a whopping one they just tested on trundle is nearly doubling the slow that his pillar emanates around it. Apparently that was too good on him (duh, I was even surprised at this test), and they scaled it way back to only test a 5% increase on each rank of the slow on his pillar.

His clear time is average. He has zero AOE's. He has to attack every individual mob with his autos. This inherently means his clear times are going to be slower than anyone who has AOE's built into their kits (Yi, Shyvana, Mundo, Udyr, Sejuani, etc).

When he jungles he has to decide between increasing his combat ability by leveling his Bite/Frozen Domain or he has to increase his ganking potential by leveling his pillar. He cannot do both. If you see his pillar isn't slowing very much, do not duel Trundle. If you see his pillar wrecking people, he's that much more vulnerable to aggression.

How to win against Trundle: Do not duel him, especially post-level 6. Wait for his lack-luster teamfights. He is a tank designed to disrupt with his pillar. That's all he's got for teamfights. Outside of his awesome health regen he literally doesn't do anything in teamfights other than run in and act scary. If he builds bruiser and is focused, he's dead. If he builds tank, he's doing zero damage. No AOE's, no hard CC's, he's just a meatbag and you can safely ignore him.

Also: Gank better than he does. I've stopped playing Trundle in ranked because he's a huge liability early game. His clear is average and his ganking is almost absent, so I am at the mercy of not having feeding/stupid teammates, and I don't like not having an early-game impact.

Almost any other jungler in the game minus Shyvana can gank far better than Trundle. Nothing makes me despair more watching my retarded teammates feed the other jungler early game when I can do nothing to assist them.

Hope this helps. He's far from broken. The fact that he's even a blip on the radar when his supposed "prey" (tanks) are all the rage right now should be proof of this. If he were so busted everyone would be using him, but he's got lackluster teamfights and his only true claim to fame is he is the single best dueler in the game.

So don't duel him.

okay,

  1. You're looking at my lolking, not my recent game history. I haven't taken Trundle into ranked yet since I'm not sure I'm at a skill level with him where I would be comfortable in ranked. I haven't "lost to him and are frustrated", I PLAY him.

  2. I love playing him, specifically AS A TANK. I don't think he's broken in the slightest, but I do think he's stronger than he should be. My current run-of-the-mill build for trundle is: item 3709 item 3153 (substitute item 3071 if enemy is running high armor) item 3260 item 3143 item 3083 item 3065. These items change according to who I'm up against but the end goal is the same, heavy defense with one offense based item that synergizes with his high attack speed.

  3. I find his ganks to be pretty easy. Frozen domain to zoom into lane from brush, a well placed pillar to prevent easy escape and boom, you're chomping down on your enemy's bum.

  4. I think his clear speeds are actually quite fast, provided I'm running with 34% bonus attack speed and 10% cooldown reduction right out of the gate with my runes and masteries.

In short, I say I think he's too strong not because I've been beaten by him, but because when I play him, I'm wrecking people most games, even in tank mode.
