Benefits and Detriments of the New Ranked System with the New Champ Select
Foreword: Anybody who has the slightest idea of how to read and has been keeping up with the news posts by Riot, or simply by just reading some of the titles of posts on the boards will know that the upcoming changes to ranked queues will be eliminating solo/duo queue in favor of the ability to have up to a 5 man premade. Now, I know there are alot of different feelings and opinions about this new system to come and about the overhaul of champion select in process, but feelings aren't always true. I'm gonna try to keep out my own personal opinions and just bring what appears to be the advantages and disadvantages the changes can bring (I'm probably gonna miss a few) By the way, this is going to be a decent size post.
Advantages of the New system: Allows players to effectively communicate team comps more effectively Makes the game more advantageous to teamwork oriented players People with friends gain higher benefits for playing together Spreads bans across the players Actually enforces pick order (Not much of a benefit due to players getting the roles they generally asked for) Allows players a greater ability to play what they want (Which can reduce trolls/increase the ability for each player to perform well) Expected faster queues for higher ELO players Better chances to be promoted due to the promo helper No more 5 support players that all wanted support(I'm kidding)
Disadvantages of the new system: Can force solo players into unfavorable grouping situations (4 man premade + 1 solo person can cause tensions to arise if the solo-player attempts to do something that the premade didn't want to do) The idea of allowing players to play in full premade teams for ranked gameplay has been tested in another game and dismissed due to its failure. (Don't ask, I can't remember the game [My ranked team coordinator for my school used to play that game in the past]) Dimishes a large aspect of solo play (Solo mechanical skill) Forces players to play with friends more often than not in order to gain an equal playing field against enemies (Soloqueue has rather low teamplay in comparison to ranked 5s, and this is kind of like forcing players to effectively have to play with somebody else to play equally with enemy teams) Champion Select can effectively take a longer time due to the selection of champs 1 at a time Promo helper doesn't do anything at Gold I and above May increase queue time if some roles aren't picked enough(I'm looking largely at support when I say this)
Conclusion(Opinion based): The new changes to the ranked system and the new champion select have a variety of different things that I personally would like to see be put into the game. Though, not every change is good, this is pretty much always going to occur. What I really don't like, however, is simply the premade 5s ability. I don't know about everybody else, but I for one can't just get a few friends to play with me in ranked at any one time, nor do I want to always have to get a few friends(especially since most of my friends aren't plat-diamond). I personally am also afraid that once the changes go into play, that if they give off unfavorable results (as was the case with a game that tried to allow the ranked premades for players to increase their respective ranks), Riot may not undo their actions. Generally if an update escapes from the PBE, it tends to stay on the live servers and played on. Let's just think about a few reworks that could have been avoided or just resulted in highly negative impacts for the champion in general and could have been reverted. (I'm really thinking about Morde when I say that) In general though, I'm pretty much happy to see quite a few of the changes, but the change to make soloqueue a more teamwork forced thing in which those with more friends will get an advantage is really not something I'd like to see. Sure, teamwork is important, but leave that to the ranked 5s. Soloqueue should be a representation of your own personal mechanical skill (which means adapting on the fly to things that occur) rather than each member relying on their friends to do a certain thing for each of them.
