Can we make the Reset on Irelia's q work properly please?

I've played a lot of Irelia, and many times her has either not given me the reset after getting the kill, or given me a reset when I didn't. I sat top, alone without a allied minion or champion, I q'd a low health enemy minion, and didn't get a reset. That. Makes. No. Sense.
