I have been watching some videos on ward control for supports with pink warding, "octopus" technique (when pushing, ward left and right of "controlled" territory) and I was wondering how the limits on wards and pink wards, visible pink wards, and trinkets have affected the meta for warding as the video in question is a bit dated (August 2013).

If your team is not helping you deep ward, at least make sure the side you're currently pushing is warded. Preferably slightly ahead of time.
Don't be afraid to aggressively replace and move your pink ward as needed.
What about the wards for dragon and baron, especially since some areas need 2-3 wards; should they always be up, and sacrifice one warding spot?
Actually, with the scuttle crab, warding baron and dragon is less stressful: you can kill the crab and get the ward there pretty easily, without having to take up one of your "ward placements".
