Smurfs are becoming a problem

Playing since season 1, never had a poblem with smurfs because they usually occured too seldom to be bothered by it. Im a gold/plat player and its getting out of hand lately, every other game one team gets on of these lvl 30-40 guys that have ~95% winrate and go 20-1 every game. Ever played with a jungler in your mmr when the enemy team has a legit smurf jungler going apeshit on you whole team ? --> its not fun! Its also not that fun when this guy is on your team, makes to whole processe of playing ranked kinda worthless.... Wonder if im just unlucky right now or if some of you have similar issues?

There are a lot, too many indeed. They are allowed, even if their influence over the game is very negative.

You can only check if they bought their account, as it seems for this case, where another guy is having your same problems: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/general-discussion/ow7UuN8E-smurfs-in-every-single-game?comment=0002

Smurfs have always been a problem, apparently. They are more of a problem this past two years.

the funniest part is that smurfs are always the ones to rage at other people calling them smurfs.

I legit havent played in 2 years, i think u can still find 2017 games in my match history, and yesterday I got raged at by a obvious smurf (a lv 8 with skins and a ton of emotes) who was saying that smurfs like me ruin the game.

I was speechless...

Smurfs are without a doubt an issue, however not nearly as influential as the misguided way riot chooses to deal with them. What should addressed is other issues that lead to smurfing minus the people who do it for fun as obviously those people do not enjoy the game for what it is but rather enjoy the idea of ruining an experience for another person. That notion aside, lets highlight some of the issues that lead to smurfing that can be addressed.

1.) Queue health/Dodge penalties- so most of us might be aware in higher elos and, should not enough new players continue to join the game, soon lower elos will have population issues making it hard to find a match. When you do find a match and for whatever reason (i'm not gonna make any speculations here.) you decide you would rather not play the game about to start with your current team. so you receive a dodge timer. In this case, many people decide to have 1 or more back up accounts to avoid completely wasting time during a dodge penalty. This raises questions as to what can be done about this that would benefit the player-base. If you have ideas feel free to reply with them.

2.)Bans/Suspensions This one is arguably an even more common cause of smurfs than the previous and as a honest person this is the category that led to myself smurfing. Similar to to the previous topic this is the result of poor management. While many things supposedly lead to suspensions or bans, i think most would agree that toxic behaviors such as bullying, hatespeech, flaming, etc. are the most frequent reasons people get banned. Typically toxic behavior stems from frustration and poor management of said frustration. Now, obviously people who are literally spreading hate are inexcusable so those people will be disregarded for this next part as they 100% should be banned everytime. So one might question how can we limit frustration that causes toxic behaviors in the community. To limit the frustration we should probably be addressing ROOT CAUSES that lead to people getting frustrated including: people who grief and intentionally sabotage their team, smurfs(ironically), other toxic players, and extremely poor match making. I will elaborate on the match making issues later. Again, if you think you know a solution or have an idea, fee free to reply in the thread.

3.) Playing with friends of different skill levels/ Boosting etc. In this case this one is more of a stand alone issue itself. Ranked Flex 5v5 and Twisted tree line 3v3 are the only two ranked game modes where friends of different skill levels should be queuing together. (example: a diamond 2 neeko main playing on a silver account with low elo friends or drunk/ under the influence of a substance.) Should all other issues causing smurfs be addressed first, then riot would be able to restrict people who smurf in solo/duo queue because it would be easy to determine their motivation for doing so.

Now, lets address the other part, the way riot chooses to deal with smurfs. This leads to a conversation about specific factor of the whole system riot uses for match making. Lets call this factor Smurf Detection and penalization. Some of you might be familiar with this mechanic riot has talked about it in the past. The general idea behind this mechanic is that players who are detected as "smurfs" will be marked and matched with "other smurfs". From my understanding of the mechanic, it works in this manner, Example: A player makes a new account and plays a couple games. This player is already quite familiar with the game. As a result, this player rather easily wins the first 3 matches they play. This player is now "detected" and tagged as a smurf. For the next few games, this player will match against other smurfs. Whether or not the "detection" desists after losing a few games i have been unable to determine accurately enough to say with confidence, and trying to get riot games to be truthful with any part of matchmaking is difficult to put it lightly.

This whole mechanic is widely problematic as many issues occur. Players who are not actually smurfs, get detected by lucky chance (or rather unlucky). Needless to say if the player is not actually a smurf or is one of a lower skill level and understanding of the game (because not all smurfs are equal) the player in question is for lack of a polite phrasing, screwed. They are going to lose some games coming up that will not even be close to fair. The other issue which i mentioned off-handedly is smurfs of different levels in skill level/game knowledge. Which i'm reasonably sure that the system does not differentiate between.

So what these situations result in, is players that have a considerable advantage against actual new players but remain in lower ranked elos for extended periods of time because the system attempts to penalize smurfing. In reality, all this actually accomplishes is ruining hundred's of games for new players that are not as familiar with the champions, their capabilities, interactions, win conditions, macroplay etc. Unfortunately, during the years i have spent playing the game i have seen more regression than progress in many of the long standing issues existing with the game.

Smurfs have completely destroyed matchmaking and the integrity of ranked play, and have been the #1 reason why the game has not been accessible to new players for a long time.

Yet the best Riot can do is mention in passing that they "frown" on smurfing.

Hi im 128/17/2019, 5:45:27 PM4 votes

rito should get their shit together and people will stop smurfing

Baby Ghoul8/17/2019, 10:50:42 AM3 votes

I see a lot of smurfs, but rarely do I see them go 20/1.

I have seen it before, but they were Master and GM smurfs, which aren't that common. Diamond smurfs are everywhere in Gold though.

Low Diamond smurfs generally don't tip the scale too much in one direction in Gold, and sometimes they can be a liability due to their massive egos. I've seen so many Diamond smurfs throw fits this season over the littlest things.

You also have to remember that so many people get boosted to Diamond and then flee to their smurf accounts to play the game. They basically only play on their mains to stop decay.

its mostly guys getting banned on their main and playing on smurf or people that are hard stuck plat/dia 5 and want to make themselves feel better by stomping new players. not much can be done about it except force those guys to climb out as quickly as possible by skipping elo brackets.

Watusa8/17/2019, 6:28:32 PM3 votes

LoL is, atm, like a plague. Everyone is stuck in it. but we all try to avoid it. Riot isint helping at all. Too buisy making kai'sai worlds skin or lux world skin to give a damned about anything beyond pro play.

I actually appeared in Karasamai's stream where he was smurfing in Gold. He killed me lvl 2 with his mid and said "what the fuck are you DOING, bro?". When it was evident that I was ghosting, he called out "wow this loser is actually ghosting me too". I got blocked when I /all chat "wow this loser is smurfing because he can't hang with the elo he was boosted to on his main account". If the only fun you can have is smashing unexperienced players... it's time for you to move on to a new game.

Where's Gargamel when you need him? I do see an occasional diamond smurf every so often & when I do have one in game, it's usually a coin toss depending on the mode.

Eunson8/18/2019, 3:30:58 PM2 votes

Anyone that is Diamond+ doesn't want to deal with the shit LP gains/losses in Diamond that apply to every account. Gaining 15 LP and losing 20 LP with a 80% win rate just isn't enjoyable.

Kendren18/18/2019, 5:03:51 AM2 votes

Game is fking boring to try to take seriously now, match quality is crap all the way up the ladder, most streamers have stated at one point they would never play in high elo if it didnt get them viewership, and u are surprised most people dont want to play up there?

If i could keep an account silver/gold forever, i would. It is way more fun dominating than it is to hope ur team didnt get the autofills, and have ur game essentially end at 5 minutes but go on another 20.

Ninjas Flossing8/19/2019, 6:36:00 AM2 votes

they aren't "becoming" a problem. the problem is simply noticeable now

The community has been saying we hate smurfs for a long time. Riot has yet to reply sadly. They hardly seem to reply to anything anyways.

I'm having this in bronze

I am also around gold plat (sometimes) Can't say I have this problem. I did see some guys not even having a rank. but it is not like they performed any good. (or maybe it is a memory trick)

Snowbrand8/18/2019, 1:34:49 AM1 votes

fix positional ranked and reduce smurfing

Rakuraidesu8/18/2019, 10:32:28 AM1 votes

I do believe that smurfing should be treated by a permaban on the smurf account (not main), pretty much like someone would buy a diamond/GM account and int there because his main is in gold/plat elo. Regarding banning, I believe that instead of permaban for toxic behavior , they should just chat restrict the user for up to 2-3 seasons. That, should definitely be the max penalty, and no ban should be issued for someone being toxic in chat. You don't restrict someone's ability to play the game because they can't keep their language under control, you restrict their ability to influence players with their language. Unfortunately tho, smurfing won't ever be addressed, at least not in the current state that riot is. Right now, every single pro player smurfed at least a couple times, even high elo streamers are smurfing quite a lot (ex gosu, that's always smurfing on another account), and while they keep doing it, riot will consider it not as an issue, so they wouldn't have to take actions against them.

If you want to get better at the game, don't play to gain Lp. Play to get better at the game, when you're against smurfs it's the perfect moment to full tryhard and see how they manage to snowball you. Like for example if you play against a yasuo smurf and you try your best. The next time you will face a yasuo, you will be prepared and have a better knowledge of the matchup. (sorry my english is dogshit)
