Magikk Shiv, a Contemplation/Discussion

The item "Magikk Shiv" is the new 120 AP item about to be released in PBE. Here's a link to the information regarding the item, if you don't yet know: http://boards.pbe.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/champions-gameplay-feedback/nJyrYqjh-new-ap-item-available-for-testing-soon

Basically, this new item is the mage equivalent of Statikk Shiv. Here's what it does:

  • Price: 3100g (same as DFG). It is built off of Needlessly Large Rod (1600g) + Aether Wisp (850g) + 650g.
  • +120 Ability Power
  • +7% Movement Speed
  • UNIQUE Passive: Gain charges upon moving or casting. At 100 charges, the next spell hit expends all charges to deal 100 (+15% AP) bonus magic damage to up to 4 targets on hit.

Further information on it (important areas are in bold):

"it's a bit different since one of the triggers is spell casts instead of basic attacks, so the cadence depends more on which champion you're playing. i believe the tuning in the first iteration that should hit pbe gives 20 stacks per spell cast, and gives a little bit less from moving than statikk shiv does."

Now, let's compare this information to the actual Statikk Shiv:

  • Price: 2500g. It is built off of Zeal (1100g) + Avarice Blade (800g) + 600g.
  • +40% attack speed
  • +20% critical strike chance
  • +6% movement speed UNIQUE Passive: Moving and attacking builds Static Charges. At 100 charges, your next attack expends the charges to deal 100 magic damage to up to 4 targets. This damage can critically strike.

While I like the idea of "Magikk Shiv" by itself, I don't believe the stats for it are right, at all.

  1. The whole point of Statikk Shiv is to buff the stats that aren't directly related to base damage (which would be AD), yet are still very important to dealing more damage for physical attackers. Magikk Shiv does not follow this philosophy, as it currently stands.
  2. Statikk Shiv's stats all work in tandem with its passive. The added attack speed, movement speed, and critical chance all are linked to the passive and help it in a meaningful way. They also help the main stats of those who have the item in their main kit.
    "Magikk Shiv" has only one stat that works with the passive, which is the added movement speed, and that is nowhere near as important as other stats for a mage. Since the main stacks will be coming from spell casts, I'm surprised that it doesn't do anything for CDR, Mana Regen, or magic pen, all key stats for a mage that aren't directly related to their base damage via AP.
  3. Mages with long cooldowns will not be able to get what they need out of Magikk Shiv's passive when compared to mages with short cooldowns. When you add in the fact that this item is not going to offer any CDR (something that DFG actually did), that's the 3rd 120 AP that will not offer one of the key stats for any mage.
  4. The "mob clear" aspect of the passive does little for a mage who is already adept at clearing mobs in a fast manner. The "poke" aspect, also, is pretty much already filled by their ability to use their abilities as safe pokes.

With that said, what stats and passive would work while staying similar to Statikk Shiv and fulfilling the original intent of DFG (which was to handle tanks)? Here's my suggestion: (Values are taken from this page: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Gold_efficiency)

  • Keep the movement speed value the same.
  • +40% attack speed (1200g value) -> 15% CDR (450g value)
  • +20% critical strike chance (1000g value) -> 150% Mana Regen (1080g gold value)

With such a low gold value with the CDR, the passive should be rather strong, right? The passive change:

  • UNIQUE Passive: Gain charges upon moving or casting. At 100 charges, the next spell hit expends all charges to ... ~~Deal 100 (+15% AP) bonus magic damage to up to 4 targets on hit. ~~
    **Afflict new status effect called "Doubt" (subject to change) that lowers target's total MR by 65% (subject to change) for 4 seconds. Damage calculations happen after the debuff is applied, causing the spell to immediately gain use from the debuff. Debuff applies to all targets hit by the charged spell. The shock it produces (like a normal Shiv) would apply up to 4 other targets like normal, dealing 100 bonus magic, and the same debuff will be applied to them, but at a reduced % and duration. (Thinking around 30% and 2-3 seconds, respectively.) **

This would not only make Magikk Shiv's stats coincide with its passive, but it would also fulfill the original intent that DFG had of being effectively used against tanks more-so than squishy carries. It would also still be comparable to Statikk Shiv, both in stats and in effect, by causing overall more damage and appreciated utility.

What are your thoughts both on the new Magikk Shiv and these suggested changes? Let everyone know!

(Same post as in General Discussion. Just giving it more chances to be seen in relevant areas.)

Edit: Its current placeholder name is Luden's Echo.

The real question is can the passive be procced multiple times on the same person. Such as Ahri Q applying it twice. If it does it's gonna be absolutely broken.

I'm having a hard time thinking of who this item would be good on. I feel like it would be best on a low cd, spammable champ that doesn't really excel on wave clear "so the statikk proc is useful", while also enjoying extra mobility. I mean I can only think of ryze for this.

Cassiopeia. This + Q = all the skillshot dodging she could want.

My main question about it procing off of a spell is, for multiple-target/multi-hittable spells, does it fire off of the first enemy hit or off of every enemy hit?

For example, Janna 's Q. Would it fire off of the first enemy hit by the tornado or every enemy?

I should note that the actual placeholder name is "Luden's Echo". I've edited the OP to state as such.

I assume it will behave similar to Yasuo's Q.
