I get you want to showcase a new game mode. It's interesting. Chaotic but interesting. Do me a favor, remove the melee only stuff on the new gear. Let anyone pick what they want and play how they want. Mages and ranged don't have a lot of escapes to begin with, minus Trist and Lucian. And remove whatever damage dampening you have for AOE mages like Zyra. I know her damage, her spikes with or without items and I can see you've artificially flattened out her damage. Don't do be that developer!
