TLDR: I agree autofill is cancer, not because I am selfish and only ever want to play my role and nothing else, but because of the amount of dodges it creates, as well as the amount of negative toxicity and trolling it breeds. Riot needs to implement a more harsh penalty system, add more forms and instances of feedback, install more required conditions to play ranked or tweak the autofill system to either have its own tribunal system or have just bring back the old draft system where you decided the role you played based on draft position. (with a system that sorts you based on recent wins, or mmr, or something and additional time (2 minutes or so would be nice) before picks/ bans to communicate with your teammates to figure out each others roles, etc. Plus punishing people more.
I experience at least 2 dodges, for every single game I actually get into, it has even gotten to the point where I have had 17, yes 17 Im not exaggerating dodges to get into 1 GAME!, and we ended up having an afk top lane and it was a remake anyway. Im not even talking about the dodges that are beta client bug based dodges where people dont select a champ or dont ban, I mean full on, aww damnit I got autofilled, I dont wanna play x role I dont like it/dont have champs for it/ dont know how to do it, and when no one trades them the lobby breaks and Im back in queue. Its almost to the point to where I have to ask in the beginning of the lobby who was autofilled and if they would rather have my role (which sucks for me because it is my main/secondary role, just so they wont dodge. Then there are the times where I get one of my roles, a couple times in a row but there are 2-3-4 dodges and I end up getting autofill because of the dodges, even though I was just in a viable lobby with either of my roles until the dodge. I dont mind autofilling, Im 100% alright with the idea of autofill because there just realistically isnt an even distribution of players wanting each of the roles and that it needs to be balanced by requiring players to play an off role occasionally (plus if you get autofilled you get autofill protection for 2? games which Riot didnt NEED to do, so that is rad as hell, and you cant be autofilled in promos). I am an avid supporter of players needing to learn and understand ALL of the game not just 1 or 2 fifths of it. I would like to see autofill prtection for those who are in danger of being demoted (stressful playing an unfamiliar role during an already stressful time where your, or your teammates' performance have the chance of getting you demoted).
The 100% real problem I have with autofill though?
The autofilled players that decide not to dodge because they dont want the wait time, dont want to lose lp, or are going to take their main role regardless of what the champion select says they are supposed to do. Those players that lock in champions that are extremely ineffective at that role or are just picked to show that the player plans on griefing or not taking the (ranked) game seriously, or just want to punish someone on the team because they dont like them (usually the adc or the player that got the role the troll wanted). I main adc with my group of friends and the amateur team I am on, but in solo queue I have to really FORCE myself to pick the role I enjoy and want to practice the most, because (depending on the time of day) it is more likely that I will get a support that is autofilled rather than someone who mains support. Which not only puts me at a disadvantage in lane because both support and adc rely heavily on each other to succeed whereas other lanes are more independent and if one team has an autofill support and the other has a support main that is a HUGE disadvantage because if effects 2 players (40% of your team) not just 1. Not even taking into account the chance of the opposing bot lane being a duo and having actual synergy. Now I am an adc who has a support that doesnt want the role, that doesnt know how to play the role, is more than likely upset and doesnt want to listen to me try to advise them how we should play the lane, but the enemy adc could have a support that enjoys the role, is familiar with the role, and is actively communicating with a 3rd party voice chat/pings/in game chat and they know how to play with each other. That scenario is along the lines of if Riot decided to make ranked 5's teams occupy the same exact queue as solo/duo queue and expecting the playing field to be even and fair.
But even that is okay because I can rise to a challenge, I am okay with testing myself while in a disadvantage so that I learn and become a better player but.....................
I havent even really touched the subject that is the real issue. Trolls. As an adc I know there is a large possibility that I will get an autofilled support, and the chances that the autofilled support is a troll is, in my experience about 30% (5% chance they are familiar with or used to play the role before, 10% chance they are competent and mentally stable enough to give it an honest try with an actual support styled champion and item build, 55% chance they will pick some kind of mage "that could totally be a viable support" and try to be a carry instead of supporting, (Im looking at you first item ludens lux or zilean support with no sightstone at 35 minutes because you "wouldnt do enough damage and would be useless to the team") which is its own topic of irritating and tilting discussion. But I am talking about the full on trolls, the blitzcrank that stays too long for the leashe and purposefully steals the junglers first buff, the Support that runs ghost tp so they can be in lane as much as possible, the support who last pick instalocks garen and goes teleport ignite, and tries to invade the enemy jungle 1v3 at level 1 to try and steal the buff with no vision, the support mf who sees you miss 1 last hit and starts auto attacking the minions to try and steal the cs from the adc the whole lane phase (who also uses her abilities, including her ultimate on the creeps to shove wave while ignoring the enemy champions and trying to last hit because "you cant farm worth a shit so I am going to be the carry now"). ADC is already a very snowbally very hell on earth time right now due to all the armor pen changes and the absolute dictatorship that is hypercarries that have take over the game power spikes at 2 items (looking at you vayne and twitch, and now in a slightly lesser but increasing case, jinx) and the fact that junglers even with the krugs xp nerf, can easily hit lvl 6 while you and your support are not quite level 4 yet (and that is without bot lane dying, backing early, or roaming) god help you if the jungler comes in at lvl 3-4 and kills one or both of you, now they can return over and over and when mid hits 6 they can join in and if your tower hasnt been taken yet you might as well just give it up and leave the lane because they will dive you, and unless they misplay or you outplay the hell out of them they will kill you and take your tower anyway. (DONT FORGET TOP LANE TP's, if you ever have a top laner in your game that know how to use it :P) So throwing in a 60% chance (not an actual stat just an estimation based on the quantity of autofilled supports I have gotten) of getting an autofilled support, and a 30% chance that that particular autofilled support will be actively and purposefully impacting your ability to succeed negatively by trolling/griefing/inting/etc it makes for an incredibly unpleasant and unhealthy (competitive-wise) system.
My rant isnt me trying to get Rito to turn off the autofill system. This rant is to try and open the eyes of someone with authority in Riot to see toxic nature that has been bred by the system. It isnt the trolls who ruin games for everyone that are getting punished. It isnt unfair to have to play an off role. Its unfair to everyone else on the team when that player decides they dont want to play the role seriously. But if they just dont say anything toxic in chat, or make the occasional dishonest "oops my bad pplaying off role didnt mean to" they become 100% immune to being punished for their actions. In addition they are granted 2 games of guaranteed protection from autofill as well as the fact that autofill doesnt happen all the time to everybody so the time between their completely toxic and trolling actions are distant enough from each other that they fly under the radar of Riot's automatic tribunal system and they never get punished for ruining the game for 4 other players and potentially ruining future games for those players by tilting them and planting distrust for other players and an overall negative outlook on the entire game as a whole in some sort of League of legends version of PTSD. Which turns adc's into "assholes" because they dont agree with someone picking off meta supports, or when they ping for their support to stop shoving the wave with abilities and auto attacks.
People hardly even report toxic or trolling players in the games I have played because no one really believes the automated tribunal even does anything effective, except to the most obvious of cases (Tyler1, etc) I have seen pro players streaming that wont even report players that make death threats, bomb threats, cyber attack threats, threats to find them at public events like twitchcon or even at lcs games and shoot or kill or attack them, IN ALMOST EVERY GAME (telling their stream chat that the player basically is always like that in almost every game) because they have 0 faith that filling out that report will make any impact or get any results whatsoever. These are the high elo players that are either well known, or at least known enough to be recognized by others immediately. So what does that mean, when players like that are never punished, how are players supposed to believe that a player in bronze-plat who is just one player in the sea of millions of players around their rank is ever going to be looked at, let alone punished, espescially if they are toxic in non-measurable means but they arent toxic in any measurable categories no toxic chat or even dishonest and sarcastic "nice" chat
