Roaming mid laners

So I'm not sure why mid laners roam. They easily lose their lane turrets if the opponent continues pushing the lane, and I've seen this a few games which lead to my team's loss. Is it expected that midlaners help gank top and bot?

it's a tradeoff, just like toplane teleport plays. If the midlaner roams at the right time, they can guarantee a wipe botlane and force down the turret for the bonus gold. Roaming is also important for midlane assassins who, for whatever reason, find themselves in a lane where they have relatively little kill pressure. Talon, for instance, will often end up hard pushing his wave to tower and roaming when he finds an opportunity to do so.

Roaming is also incredibly important if you're playing a snowbally champ in mid. Once akali gets one or two kills on her lane and hits 6, she needs to roam to abuse her power spike and turn it in to a midgame advantage for the team.

They're supposed to push the wave first so they can roam and be back by the time the wave hits tower ideally.

See if you can force the enemy laner to back, push the wave in then hit a roam thats the ideal, but a lot of people don't do this b/c theyre just kill hungry and dont pay attention to the macro consequences of their call

As a Taliyah main, my playstyle is roaming. Obviously, roaming doesn't fit every midlaner, but the champions that are built around it will do it. Clearing the wave hard and fast before your minions get killed and leave lane fast to help out the other lanes. People roam because they want to snowball their team. Getting botlane ahead is really good, especially when they have some problems. The enemy midlaner should not be able to take your turret in the time that you roam. You usually miss 1 wave while roaming and if you lose your tower in that time, you already made mistakes before roaming.

Not every mid laner roams. Certain champs excel more when they roam since they got mobility and wave clear. How effective it is? That depends on the skill of player and the knowledge when to do things.

Champions like Ahri Talon Zed Fizz will roam a lot to get fed and shut down carries.
