How do you fight Shen as a melee champion?

if I get close to him he just taunts me and does 9% of my hp with his Q. if his passive hits me then he does 15% of my hp. I can't fight back when the taunt ends either because he just uses his AOE dodge skill.

I also can't directly fight him either because he just builds tanky but does a shitton of max hp damage

do I have to pick a ranged champion like Quinn or Graves?

His taunt has a decent cooldown (16 seconds at first rank) so one he taunts you he can't do it again right away. Same for his W more or less.

His Q is a short cooldown but does the most damage when it moves through you. So positioning is key.

Just like Illaoi, dodge stuff or get rekt.

I really expect some nerfs here, he is at 52 winrate on top just after his rework, once players get grasp of his new kit better it can be expected to rise, and as we know from history if Shen is any strong he dominates competitive scene with ease. Sadly the same ability that makes Shen broken if he is able to lane decently is the most identifying to him and it wasn't touched.

His damge is bad once the taunt is on it's cd, and once W is over he also isn't really tanky early on. Just all in him once stuff is on cd early on. He has no mobillity to avoid you fighting him duering his downtimes, and he got no sustain.

Picking a ranged champ vs shen is just unfair, even a sige minion would be a harder fight than new shen for ranged champs...

Garen works well: activate E+W when you see he taunts you, and he can't avoid the damage (it's not basic attack) while doing reduce damage with his empowered aa thanks to your W. When your E ends, use your Q to silence him and back. You need good reflexes, though, and are vulnerable if you use your E to farm/push.

This specific hard-counter aside, I'd say the key is to not even try to fight. As you said it, you cannot win trades if you play on his terms, so don't even try, or just punish him if he misses his taunt while it's on CD. Sure, the lane will be boring, but just farm, get gold, and roam. If he tries to ult on another lane, then try to hard-CC him. If you cannot, push and take his tower.
