Tips on Beating Illaoi
EDIT : It seems that people are more focused on the broken opinion. It is simply my opinion, because there are many strategies to play against her in my honest opinion. If you think she's broken, also fair enough. Everyone is entitled to think what they would like. Keep in mind this post is simply a discussion to help players defeat her in lane and in game :)
Howdy, Summoners!
I've seen a few flame posts about my new love in league right now, Illaoi
(rank 4 in 3 days lol), and I stand by the opinion she is not broken. Strong, of course, but I think broken is when Yasuo could solo baron at 20 minutes. There's a big difference. Either way, if anyone has been feeling the rage build in their belly, I thought I'd share my two cents on how to play against her.
A few things to keep in mind:
-
She is a juggernaut. She does damage, and the trade off is next to no mobility or CC. This is true for Illaoi. Complaining that Illaoi does tons of damage is like complaining why you Gnar gets so tanky during mega form, or complaining that Jax wins in a 1v1. It's how their champion is designed, and Illaoi is no different, and anything from broken.
-
She is heimerdinger. Literally, that's a good way of thinking about it. Do people dive into heimerdinger when he has three turrets up? That usually ends up in tears. Same goes with Illaoi. Does she have two tentacles nearby? If so, either kill the tentacles or wait for her to advance to a new location. She is not an initiation juggernaut like Skarner, she is zone-control. Do not fight on her turf. If you must, hopefully you've brought a champion that can take her out of her turf, like Lee Sin, or Alistar in teamfights, or Janna, or Tristana, etc. A good way to deal with Illaoi is to take her out of her zone.
-
If Illaoi gets a great ult off in lane, or even trying to start a teamfight, what the hell is keeping you there? Do you charge in guns blazing against every raid boss? No, that'd be stupid. There is strategy - times when you must engage, and times when the boss is obviously stronger. Keep in mind that the ult, even if it hits, will actually do nothing until there is a spirit/vessel nearby, or with Illaoi's W. So that being said, her all-in pattern is very predictable. If you're going in for a trade and you see her pull your spirit in close range, now might be a good time to back off. You can even reengage the fight afterwards if she only hits the vessel, summoning a total of one measly tentacle.

Kill tentacles when you can. Seriously, they're two hits. If Illaoi W's you and you've already hit the tentacle, you'll kill it fast enough to where it won't respond.
I play a lot of Illaoi because she's hellaoi amounts of fun, and so I can say, "Ayyyy Lmaoi" after I get a kill. Playing her as much as I have, I've seen many champions work to a large amount of success to beat her. Champions include:
Fiora (you can dash around her Q and E, all the while countering the tentacle smackdown. Keep in mind if Illaoi hits you with W, there's a minor delay)
Olaf (you can straight up out-damage her with all in, and while she'll heal in bursts, your auto-attacks with heal consistently)
Quinn (If you're good with range, use and abuse Illaoi. Especially with how strong Quinn is right now)
Vlad (Later on you'll have some great poke. Plus you can dodge the E or her ult)
Lee Sin (Not particularly top lane, but his knock-back kick really messes up with Illaoi's placement.
Trundle (Out-tank, out-play right clicking potential)
Kayle (Ult yourself during hers, and you negate all hentai wallop, which will also deny Illaoi from healing off it)
Tahm Kench (Being Tahm Kench)
Tryndamere (ult > her ult)
Lulu (wonderful lane bully, and can cupcake Illaoi if she tries to iniate)
Soraka - support (Illaoi's strength is staying in her zone and using her abilities. Have a silence!)
Champions I am curious about are:
- Fizz -Vladimir
- Jax
- Riven
I can understand why people may be upset by this champion. Illaoi is a counter to all-in champions, and you always need to think twice when you dive. Being an Ekko main myself, it can get bothersome that no matter how many little outplays I do, she can sit there and take a beating. But that is what Riot intended, and there are ways to play around it.Illaoi is a straight solo-q crushinatrix - almost all juggernauts are. But there's a reason why in Champion.gg she has one of the worst win rates as a top laner (I believe it's 3rd worst, or 4th). There's a reason despite so many people whining over Darius being broken and yet in professional play he was shut down almost ever time. I know this isn't the LCS, but you can certainly learn a thing or two.
The way I see it, there might be a small adjustment to damage, but not too much because she is keeping her juggernaut status. So as a player I believe there are two options: you can A) keep complaining about a champion they refuse to adjust your playstyle and have less fun in the game, or B) respect a champion's potential, and by doing so you'll find weak spots and learn to work around her!
I hope people choose the latter.
I'm not an expert, nor am I top f*cking percentage in this game xD but I do a bit of Illaoi. I have taken the liberty to link my OP.GG account, in case people are going to argue that I know nothing due to my elo, so I've taken the first step to give you that argument merit :P
I am willing to answer any questions or concerns that come to mind :) happy holidays!
