Champion Masteries?

Hey guys. . . I'm a little behind on knowing what's going on with League of Legends. When I went back on, I notice the champion list had these mastery points on them. I manage to level one of my owned champions to level 2 but I'm not sure what it's for. You guys know?

It just gives u X amount of points for your champ per game based on how well you did or if you win or lose, more points you get the more mastery you get for the champ, kinda a way of keeping track of how much you play each champ over time.
