Can we just take a moment and consider...

...the fact that no game will be perfect, complete, or please everyone who plays it?

Here's what I'm talking about: It's fine to complain to Riot about problems in the game. It's helpful. What is NOT helpful is the single-minded focus on League's flaws and Riot's shortcomings, the obnoxious "daily reminder" posts, and the general attitude of entitlement our community displays.

Riot is not a giant company with lots of employees, like EA or Blizzard (those guys have thousands of people). They don't have the resources to solve every problem in a game as complex as League at the drop of a hat, or even in a decent window of time. Contrary to popular belief they actually AREN'T lazy idiots who don't care about us, and they've put a lot of work into this game that we don't give them credit for. Sure they make mistakes, but who doesn't? That's just human nature.

Here's just a few of the things they've done to improve League over the years:

  • Artwork. Look at splash arts, animations, and in-game footage from 2009-2011. It's low-quality, low-detail, and generally ugly. Riot's generally done an amazing job of updating almost every part of the game to look fresh and beautiful. I know a good number of people don't like the new SR, but that's a matter of personal opinion.

  • Balance. What other gaming companies release sizeable patches every 2-4 weeks with detailed explanations on their reasons for tweaking the game? This is the biggest reason League has lasted/grown this much.

  • Champions. Back in the early days of 2009-2010, they were releasing new champions with every patch (sometimes two at a time). Now they take a lot of time developing the theme, character, and feel of each champion to make them something really cool and exciting. They also release a lot of extra promotional material like artwork / comics / videos / music to add to the hype (the DJ Sona music for instance).

  • Fighting toxicity. Riot has actively put a LOT of effort into not just providing a quality gaming experience for its playerbase, but to even try to improve the general attitude and mindset of its players when they play League. I'm talking about the Honor System, the Mute button (a godsend vs. ragers), the Tribunal and reporting players, all of its player behavior articles and analysis, and the new Reforms system. I know a lot of these didn't work or didn't last very long, but the point is that Riot is actively fighting the general toxicity that's the hallmark of online games.

// just a side note, toxicity is something native to the **_internet_**, not just League itself. You will always find trolls, ragers, flamers, and general idiots wherever you go online because that is the consequence of giving someone with anonymity and a keyboard complete freedom to say whatever he/she wants.

Get. Over. It.

  • Esports. It wouldn't be anywhere close as successful if it weren't for Riot's involvement. Yes, there's a slew of problems that came from it (like Lee/Thresh/Zed not properly getting nerfed) but overall it's a huge bonus to League's lifetime and Riot's revenue (which helps them improve/add more to the game and fix your problems). LoL esports also gives dozens of players the opportunity to compete on a global scale that would otherwise be impossible.

  • Network. This is a big problem that still hasn't been solved, but Riot is well on its way to fixing connectivity issues / latency differences with its new server network (and openly sharing their progress on it). It took them years to start this, but seriously: What kind of company creates an entire continental network for a VIDEOGAME? That's insane! Riot really DOES care about your poor connection, and they're pulling a crazy feat to remedy the issue as best they can, for all parties involved.

So next time you're tempted to create yet another complaint thread, stop and think for a moment: Does Riot probably already know this? Is this a legitimate, relevant problem with the game that hasn't already been addressed or is it simply me wanting what I want? Write objectively, consider all the facts, and think of the game as a whole and not solely your personal experience. And above all, please please PLEASE do not assume you're entitled to a perfect game. League will never be perfect. Understand that, accept that, and enjoy the game for what it is.
