Do Mages take skill to play?

GnarDominator··1 votes·1,107 views

Lets take Xerath for example. He is all skill shots but as a champ, there is no interesting or hard mechanic to learn apart from that u gotta hit the skill shots. Assuming we disregard that as a general skill, his and essentially all mages have cds of around 5,4 or 3 seconds mid to late game which means its especially spamming burst from the other side of the screen. Even if you don`t hit the skill shots you are way too far to reach for their team and just send another 1 in 5 seconds which will 1 shot an ADC while having cc to cope with most standard assassins. While this isnt a complaint about mages being too OP (although I would love to do that), do mages actually take a lot of skill to play? (Note I have played them before and was just spamming abilities and barely dying so this isn't of salt from the enemy team.)

Edit: This discussion is actually humorous. Ty for all the people that just gave an honest opinion but you think after writing about not being salty about mages in my games as well as straight up admitting that mages are not OP just wondering about the skill level you wont get comments accusing you of being salty and thinking mages are op.[zombie-brand-mindblown]

Edit #2: Xerath is just an example of a typical mage, I`m not talking about him as a champion but rather the general class and their kit.

Skill shots take skill. Xearth has 0 ways to protect him self you need to learn how to position with him. You need to learn your matchups you're extremely squishy.

Not to nit pick, but doesn't he have a stun to help protect himself? All mages have some form of CC. Granted Xerath has drastically low CC for a mage, but it's something.

his stun is a 0.5 sec stun vs melee. so no. he cant protect him self.

but lets say that melee used their mobility to lock onto the mage and is just autoing to finish. This 0.5 seconds may and frequently does save the xerath considering his w is also a slow.

Good positioning isn't a skill that only affects Xerath, or any other mage. It's something that literally every single champion has to do, and when you have 5x the range of every other class of champions in the game and low cooldown CC it should be trivial to make sure they never touch you. Mage kits are almost all cookie cutter, rinse and repeat spells with the only really unique thing being the ult. One long range AOE waveclear ability, one long range line skillshot CC with a garbage hitbox, and then either another long range utility spell or long range nuke and you have the kit of every mage in the game. The only threat to a someone playing a mage is another mage or their own incompetence.

Did you get stomped by a Xerath because you failed at buying boots to counter his entire kit?

Did you also forget to buy even a single HP item making his only burst window also useless (since even a Doran Blade is enough to negate him the kill)?

Mages take skill to play, you are just salty that you lost to one.

Its funny really, if you were to turn around and play that exact same mage you would get stomped. This reminds me of the time Hashinshin said the same thing about Viktor top but then when he played him he fed so hard that the system thought he was inting and gave him a 2 week ban.

interesting you leave out he was being camped and also against one of Viktors hardest counter picks

Interesting you leave out that he said the champion was so busted that none of that stuff matters.

Edit: in case you need a refresher of his rant on the champion and how much he was pumping up how strong he was.

  • Their early game is weak, they have to scale.
  • They require good positioning against Assassins/ bruisers which u will find in every game Evelynn Rengar JarvanIV Khazix Irelia Zed Yasuo Akali Katarina Kayn.
  • They require to land a skillshots in the meta where every possible threat has a dash, akali has 3 of them actually, goodluck hitting a skillshot.
  • They are too far away to reach them ? Rengar and kayn can just run half of the rift and get u from any angle. Irelia and yasuo can just dash through minions or, champions to u, jarvan just jumps on u half of the screen. Katarina has the highest mobility in the game, its just impossible to run against good kata. Evelyn and kha can sneak to u from behind and delete u +item 3117 item 3142 yeah they are hard to reach.
  • item 3157 is double edged sword, and is only good working against zed because his R is culminating his burst, but still he can just delete u from qwe aa combo, so be aware.

Oh I forgot about MonkeyKing Hecarim RekSai which can one shot u too, and the parkour guy Talon .

Mages are good against some bruiser match ups on top and that's all. They are trash now, except few: Ryze require skill and 200 IQ to land good R, but overall he is a good match against assassins. AurelionSol Sol is in my opinion the hardest champion in the lol. Roaming machine, good on solo que, strong lvl 1. Azir Mobile, hypercarry, don't really have much counters, but he needs time to scale and positioning to do something, his only counter is his team feeding early, and also weaker front lane than enemy. Vladimir Currently he is a bullshit, after 2 items without feeding an enemy and dying much, u can 1v5, play him. He definetly needs nerf. Lux Velkoz 2 easy champions 1 has an aoe shield, 2 man root high burst dmg , and the second one is just destruction lvl 100 whenever u land a 3 skillshots, u just melt anyone in any stage of the game.

The rest of mages are meh in my opinion. I guess u have never played as a mage against good assassins, that u had to run over whole map, because he just was waiting for u in every bush, corner and angle of the map, in any moment, even teamfight. Welp good luck with your journey of op mages.

Try playing Xerath yourself to answer that question. Your skills will tickle anybody who snowballs on you and if you ever do mess up you're so far behind you can afk.

I used to main him for quite a bit when i was more or less new. From that time I remember my macro being complete terrible but I barely fell behind on him. Sure, there were some match ups where I struggled but I didn't completely feed even in worse matchups and scaled realy well.

Mages take skill but they're probably on the middle-low end alongside fighters except for a handful of mechanical champions like Azir Asol and Ryze

Hard disagree, spread across all archetypes there are easy and hard champs. There are mages that are harder to play then most assassins, there are fighters harder to play then most things in the game. Whats hard and whats easy is determined by the champions not their category.
