I Got Placed Against Gold Players As An Unranked

After not playing for four seasons (I think it's four now, anyway), I decided to come back. I was surprised to find that during placements, I was not only matched against players way above unranked skill level (The highest I faced in placements was Gold 2), but also against players that are ranked higher than I had ever ranked before (I finished Silver in Season 4 and Season 5). I'm not here to complain about my situation; I welcome a challenge and getting experience against higher-level players, but I do think that my mmr being so high is evidence of something being jacked up. I will admit I am an oddity given that I am a returning player, but shouldn't I have been placed with players lower than where I ended in Season 5? I think it could have saved my teammates a lot of hassle and me a lot of flaming(I ended up going 1-7 in placements, and got placed in Bronze I despite the opponents I was going up against, ouch). Has anything similar happened to anyone else?

your mmr is fucked because you havent played in so long, just keep playing and you'll be gucci

You could also be experiencing players who got to gold that didnt deserve to be there, and their mmr is actually lower than their rank.

Yes, that's how Riot decided to treat "unranked" accounts this season. I put that in quotes because after a year of not playing ranked at all, you get stripped of your Ranked MMR (think of it like this: Each season there's a soft reset. You have had 4 soft resets). Riot decided this season that new accounts and unranked accounts will be placed in their matches against mid/high Silver MMR (like an above comment said, their MMR may be high Silver in order for this to happen). You'll play your entire placements in mid/high Silver to help you get the huge LP gains per win to place you "accurately".

It really sucks, but that's what Riot decided to do this season. I'm having the joys of Bronze again on a side account that I freshly leveled up T.T
