My Thoughts on Vi and Assault and Battery
I recently picked up Vi, who, from what I've read, is excellent in solo-queue (especially at lower ELO's like mine), but is not seen that often in competitive play. While playing her, one thing about her kit struck me as extremely odd: the burst damage of Assault and Battery.
Let's start by reviewing VI's core fantasy: she loves punching things and playing rough. It doesn't matter how tough you are, she WILL find a way to beat the snot out of you, given that she catches you and doesn't die before she can. All of VI's other abilities play into this idea of being a tank shredder with high sustained damage (Denting Blows being the biggest, with a whopping 10% max health damage at Max rank). Basically, what she wants to be is someone who goes all in on melee sustained damage. If she misses her Q, she deserves to die, but if it lands, oh boy are you in trouble.
However, this is not what Vi actually is in game. Assault and Battery, while being a very cool ability whose concept perfectly fits her theme, pigeonholes her into being more of an bursty anti-carry. This is why so many Vi players take Electrocute; she HAS to burst people down, or she'll die before she gets the rest of her damage off.
With all of this in mind, why not make Assault and Battery a spell that tanks actually fear? They should feel the need to get out of her way, or get run over. Here's how I would change VI's ultimate ability.
First of all, why is it so effective against carries? It should not be capable of one-shotting someone, it's a tool for initiating on them so her team can follow up, or so she can start beating the carry up herself over time. By cutting the burst damage of VI's ultimate, it allows us to buff her in ways more suitable to her core fantasy:
(150/375/500 + 110% AD) => (100/200/300 base damage) (Numbers not final)
So, after the burst threat is lessened, how would I buff Vi? The answer is pretty simple: make her more threatening to the tanks in her way, while keeping her as threatening or less to carries. How can we do this? We could make the ult scale off of the target's maximum or even current health (keep in mind that anyone in her way is dealt the same damage as the target) :
(100/200/300 base damage + 5/7.5/10 % of maximum/current health (+1% per 100 AD)) (Again, numbers can be changed)
What this does is make Assault and Battery a legitimate threat to anyone in her way. These players now have to get out of the way, or take big damage, no matter what role they are playing. They still have plenty of time to do so, but now it actually matters. I think that that's much more interesting than "tank the damage, then burn Vi". She's actually less threatening to carries than she is now in terms of burst (assuming numbers are tuned correctly), but her role as a tank shredder is solidified, and the carry will still have to either kite away from Vi or face the wrath of her sustained damage.
That's what I think Vi needs to truly fulfill her fantasy, and lessen her pubstomp potential (I love dunking people as much as the next guy, but let's face it, the current iteration of Assault and Battery is not fun to play against at all). What do you guys think? I'd especially love to hear from players with many games on Vi. Do you think that a change like this would work, or do I have it wrong? EDIT: Here's an alternate idea that I consider to be wayyyyy over the top, but in the same vein as my previous suggestion. Lower the damage, but as opposed to just doing %health damage to all targets hit, have the full effect of Denting Blows proc on EACH target hit. The %health, the armor shred, the blast shield CDR, AND the attack speed. Obviously way OP, but still food for thought
