Climbing as a Support in low elo

webbles - Summoner's Champion Information - League of Legends

My name is Webbles and I'm a support main. Season 5 and Season 6 I was in silver and I always had aspirations of getting over the hurdle into gold. Finally in season 7 I have made it to gold 5. I really wish I had helpful tips and advice back when I was struggling so I thought I would give a few tips and tricks to climbing as support in lower elos.

  1. Find your play style. As you're aware there are different kinds of supports but we'll classify them in sub-roles.

Play Makers - Thresh Bard Blitzcrank Leona Alistar If you're like me, you want to win lane and make a highlight reel out of your match. This sub-role gives you a much better chance of carrying the game as a support. Even if you're down a good chunk of gold, one big hook, ult, combo turns it all around.

Peel and Heal - Sona Soraka Janna Nami Lulu There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a passive approach and keeping your team alive to get you through the game. With lethality coming into play your adc needs more peel than ever (not to mention the rising tanks in the meta). The unsung heroes of every game.

The "Do it all"'s - Bard Rakan Morgana Karma Not only are these champions fun to play, but they're so rewarding when played well. Making picks, saving team mates, laying down the crowd control. A bit of risk-reward here however.

Protectors - Braum TahmKench Zilean Nautilus Got beef? These guys have a simple take on support. They're going to eat the damage for their team and lay down the crowd control to enable their team. Not only that but they are so obnoxious for enemy engagers and assassins.

  1. Once you're comfortable with your champion pool and style of play, the big tip here is VISION. Even if you're performing poorly, placing the right wards at the right places at the right time can give your team so much information. Keep an eye on your map, get some wards down the river or even deeper, and track your enemy's rotations. Control wards are cheap and don't expire (hint hint).

  2. With your vision down, you want to track the enemy jungler during lane. It's probably the most underrated thing I do as a support, but calling out to your laners where the jungler will be, and spotting him out on wards saves lives. It'll also help your jungler with their pathing and clear routes.

  3. Roaming. The enemy bot lane backed after a trade and you're cleaning up this one last wave before basing? Why not take a look at mid lane? A good roam can make the enemy mid laner blow a fash or just give up any pressure they had on the lane for a moment. If your jungle is on your side of the map you can invade with them for vision and help if you find some bogies.

  4. Play. Don't type. There will be flamers, ragers, and quitters. It's inevitable. The key to league is a good mental state so you can play more than 2 games without punching a wall. So when your adc flashes under turret trying to get one last auto for a kill and spam pings you, just take a deep breath. When you start typing instead of moving around the map and processing what is happening, the game is over right there. Mute who you need to and focus up.

  5. Objectives over kills. Everyone gets blood thirsty at lower elos. If you just killed three people and bot tier one tower and drag are up, why are you gonna chase the enemy yasuo half way down the lane? Objectives win games, folks. If your team isn't on the same page as you on that, use your pings and be vocal.

  6. Peel. Your adc will love you for it, and the longer your damage dealers are up, the higher chance you have of winning the fight. Eat skill shots for them, use your sona ult on the warwick ulting your adc instead of going for your dream 3-4 man sona ult. Don't be afraid to die in their place.

  7. Late game. Whether you agree with the plays your team is going for or not, you have to stay grouped. Do it together or don't do it at all. Together apes strong.

Yes, I do realize I'm only gold 5 and these tips may not be something new or completely accurate, but for my bronze and silver support mains out there... Try to stick to these and climb. Whether it's one ranked game a day or grinding the afternoon away. Good luck on the rift. This is my first post of anything like this, if it's insightful or helpful or want any specific details on anything I'd be happy to help.

I liked the rhymes you put in xD Very creative. Also very nice list of supports, and how they work. Hopefully when i have more time to take this game seriously as an ADC/Mid laner, i'll get some supports who read your post xD and are able to help my lame ass out.

Good tips for low elo for sure. There seem to be times when ADCs are all bad or all the teams you get are bad and you are better off with a mage. I prefer Soraka but when RIOT sticks me with the worst players they can find it's time for Brand and Zyra.
