DFG made AP burst mages near impossible to balance. The only way to make an AP mage with DFG balanced was to make them so weak they required DFG, which is not something they wanted.

Now, the interactions between Hydra and Riven, and Ghostblade and Yi are not anywhere near the same as DFG was to burst mages. The removal of DFG was not a statement on other champion types that can burst down people in one combo, it was an attempt to increase the number of balance changes that can be made in the future.
