Matchmaking

First off, it would be wonderful if in the options to report someone, maybe at the bottom, there can be an option "All of the Above". Just played a match with someone who confessed to doing drugs while playing the game, who then proceeded to feed.

Second, what is matchmaking??

I have some value or rank attached to my account which indicates whether I win or lose when matchmade with 9 other people, who are all selected to play with me based off their prior experience in matches with 9 other people. Does this make any sense at all? In turn, my rank ultimately indicates the mass skill level of the community I have played with. Granted, whether or not I'm good occasionally makes a slight difference in whether or not I win or lose.

People have been talking about elo hell for the longest time, and I've heard a lot of players mention that LoL has one of the worst player bases. It really is a big turn off to play ranked matches and to realize that you are at best one tenth of the contribution to your rank.

I realize that players cannot choose their own rank, but why not have some system that, at very least, holds players accountable to their teammates for their rank. If I am super terrible, and my 4 teammates carry me to victory, I should not gain rank. Likewise, if I do super well, and my teammates feed, I should not lose rank. If someone on the enemy team does well, and has teammates who feed, I feel obligated to honor them but they still lose rank. If someone on my team feeds, and we still win, I feel obligated to report them but they still gain rank.

The natural result of this is a value or rank which completely disregards individual players. One of my friends I enjoy playing with is Bronze and he is consistently better than the Gold players I get matchmade with. And ironically, since moving into Gold, I can no longer queue with him since our "skill levels" are too distant. He, unfortunately, mains support.

Moral of the story: Don't be a part of the system.

The only way for your personal actions to be used to accurately determine your effect on the match overall (for either the win or loss) would be for a panel of experienced and highly trained judges to sit and watch your match and come to a consensus by voting.

The game itself can't determine it just by looking at your scores, because you can artificially inflate them while still having no beneficial impact on the match (like afk farming and not showing up for teamfights, beating on tanks to get high damage dealt, kill stealing and running from teamfights to secure a good KDA).

Also, players are usually biased about their own skill and impact on the match and against others for perceived mistakes. That's why you'd need a third party to make that call.

Sucks for your friend though. Hard to climb as a support if you get an ADC that is bad or doesn't think enough like you. A good bet might be to find a good ADC to duo queue with until he hits Silver to queue with you again. I managed to get into Gold with just Nami, but it was because I usually had a good ADC.

I don't think you can base whether you gain or lose LP strictly on how you perform. You can easily inflate your stats if losing meant that you could still gain LP by performing well. Avoiding teamfights or afk farming to inflate your stats and make you look better even though you are not contributing to your team at all because "Hey I can still gain LP if I lose so long as I have good stats." I think the only possible solution to the current situation is to base LP gains/losses on performance. What I mean by this is that you will still lose LP for a loss and gain LP when you win, but the amount you gain/lose will be based on how well you do. If you do well but your team still loses, you lose LP but less than you would have if you performed bad and lost. Same thing with winning, if you win but do poorly and ultimately get carried then you gain less LP than you would if you performed well in your teams win.

TL;DR Having whether you gain or lose LP based on performance is a bad idea, easily inflatable. Having the amount of LP you win/lose based on your performance is much better because you should still be trying to win because even if you sit back to inflate your stats you will eventually get demoted 7 LP at a time.

I understand the potential for stats to be artificially inflated and therefore feign some notion of skill, but the reality is, players in the match know who is making a difference. I can't convince my opponents or teammates I am the best top laner when I refuse to leave top lane. Performance is performance, not score. The fact of the matter is, in the current system I have no accountability to my teammates OR opponents to perform at any skill level.

I'm not advocating a third-party ranking system, I'm just advocating accountability to the 9 players I get matchmade with.

Imagine a system where each player scores the other players in each match, and the impact of the score is relative to its consistency throughout matches. For example, if, in a given match, 8 players score me as a 5 star player and the last person scores me as a 1 star, their relative weighting in scoring will diminish, whereas the others will increase.

I think even if a system of this nature were implemented without effecting rank, it would begin to reflect the reality that I am matchmade with teammates/opponents far below, and far above, my own skill level, yet all of us possessing a similar 'rank'.
