Confused Summoner (Looking for some Insight please Help)

Please excuse my poor writing or grammar but i just had to ask the boards a question with the hopes of gaining some insight as to how the ranking system matches up. Now let me start this off by saying I by no means consider myself an expert at league by any stretch of the imagination just a disclaimer so no flames. :-) But i recently had a game playing jungle zac where my mid laner was Gold 3 (Twisted Fate) and his opponent was Diamond 5 (Ahri) and I am ranked at Plat 3. So my main question is how do huge discrepancies like that happen in ranked games? Because needless to say the Mid laner absolutely smashed our entire team... Just was looking for some feedback and insight.

It is typically because someone of differing ranks qued together.

So if a Gold V and a Plat I que together it will also try to make the opposing team similar in composition.

Was that a Ranked game or a Normal game? It happens a lot in Normals, because high ELO players that play mostly in Ranked use Normals to train, so have a much lower MMR, so get matched against low ELO players. For instance, I'm currently Gold5 but regularly matched against Bronze3 in Normals.
