How do i lane against shen?

Now im not the best player, ill admit that, but i have no idea how to lane against shen. I dont see him often, but when i do it isnt pretty. I usually die to him at least twice in lane an then have to play from behind. every time i go against him im a melee character like tryndamere or hecarim. If i try to play passively he pokes me out with his q and when i trade back he shields and sustains up. In light of this, i try to trade with him a lot, but even when i get him lowish he just sustains up with q and i eventually run out of pots and get pushed out of lane. i usually die from staying too long or being taunted into a jungler gank. is there anything i can do to beat him or at least survive?
