@riot mana regeneration

I am just wondering how you guys at riot feel about mana regen items in 4.20. I am a lux main and I have to say that after playing a bunch of tester games this patch is untenable. I agree that it may be bad to just put into the game a must have item for every mage since it takes a high power fix and applies it evenly to all champions, even those that don't need it as much, but it also served the role of enabling many old mages who have not had their mana costs or cooldowns modernized. This in conjunction with the plan to dramatically reduce the duration of blue buff has me worried.

I guess my question is, which of these is most likely?

a) A new item will be introduced that gives a similar power spike as Athene's but has some delaying mechanic (like tear) to force the power spike out of the laning phase.

b) Athene's will be reverted/changed to have additional value.

c) Athene's dependent mages will be forced out of viability until they get individual reworks because you feel "wave-clear" mages have an unhealthy influence.

I am not saying that these champions can not be played and I do realize morellonomicon is a somewhat manageable option. It is just that many champions I enjoy watching, including my main, have existed on the cusp of competitive viability all season and it makes me sad to see them take a hit. Any insights would be appreciated.

I've testet a few champions that are considered old, for example Brand and Malzahar, which have very high mana costs (well Malzahar gets some mana back from E kills, but still). If you build RoA and then Athenes you won't run out of mana at all, it's literally impossible even without blue buff. At around 50% mana you'll get something like +15 mana per second which is quite insane + you get some nice hitpoints from RoA and some MR from athenes + cdr. It might delay your power spike but you can spam spells 24/7 for siege or waveclear. Just a thought :)

There is already a minor buff on Chalice/Athenes increasing the passive from 1.5% to 2% being tested on the PBE. Additionally as of the last pre-season Q&A Riot seemed to be of the opinion that they overnerfed Athenes.

Removing 1000 range instant waveclear every wave in lane phase was probably the goal of nerfing athenes. Tear does the same thing for you lategame but makes you weaker early game. Which i would say is ok since it gives you a lot of stall power.
