In a game with only one meta.

Things seem to be the same everygame. Why no. Marksmen mid, support and apC in blue buff lane. Sustain tank to farm against them, lee sin jungle. That's different enough right?

A ranged carry cannot function in mid lane optimally. Mages counter them hard and mid lane is the most easily ganked position on the map. If you go mid, you need to have an escape and ward at least one side of the river and position yourself on that end to avoid ganks as much as possible.

The standard team formation is for optimal XP and gold gains for each champion on the team. Top lane gets a whole farm to themselves and is situated somewhat safely in a corner. Mid lane also gets a whole farm to themselves, but they sacrifice the safety that top lane enjoys for faster XP and gold gains since creeps reach mid lane towers fastest. The "marksman" shares a lane with the support because they rely on early game protection. The marksman shares XP gains with the support, but is allowed the most gold from that lane. The jungler clears neutral camps and, in exchange for lessened XP gains, benefits from the buffs offered to them by larger monsters.

Try breaking the meta!

Sometimes if we have an AD top jg and mid I'll take an APC botlane, usually annie... and after I discuss it with my teammates.

Also graves mid is pretty good

Just because everyone else follows a certain meta doesn't mean you have to. Innovations gotta start somewhere right?

Well Lee is already jungle but this was a metaless game when it first came out but over time those positions have been proven to be the strongest. Although in the LCS they sometimes duo jungle or swap adc and support to top lane but that stuff requires better communication especially when this meta has been hardcoded into every league player's head.

There's only one meta in everything.

It's the single best way to play the game at the moment. Every time changes happen (usually triggered by a patch), everything that's still good stays, new things are added, and old stuff that doesn't work anymore gets thrown away.

Just ask the dinosaurs, meta shifts are rough.
