I play mostly team builder, and I never really had a problem before. However, recently I've been seeing gold and platinum players in the same game that I'm in, and I don't even play ranked. Why are these players getting grouped with unranked, Bronzes, and silvers?
The teambuilder matchmaking system is inherently broken, and will continue to be as long as it has it's own MMR. Meaning, if a Diamond has NEVER played teambuilder, or even a few times, he has a great chance of going against say a level 30 who's also only played a few times. It's really dumb and unfair as more often than not I get games that are skewed in the enemy favor, I'll be playing with my gold friends, and we'll have one platinum, whilst the enemy team will have a silver, 2 Diamonds, and 2 plats.
It sucks.
Offtopic: I've never played teambuilder. Is it fun? Less raging/troll ppl?
Play normals and hope you get the role/champ you want or play team builder, get your role/champ and pray you don't get matched with four unrankeds against five plats. That's the long and the short of it right now.

Less rage perhaps but people troll about as often as normals, if not so more. They tend to try more silly builds/roles.
Yeah, I was playing with a silver and a plat on my team, and I haven't even started ranked. Of course, they were all unranked on the enemy team, so I wasn't arguing, but y'know. Just kinda confused why it happened.
Ranked and Normals mmr is a separate beast. On one hand, you might be really good. On the other, they might not play teambuilder often.
I (was) Platinum before I let the ranking decay. I'm regularly grouped with Diamonds and the occasional Master in Team Builder. It uses your normal MMR, not your ranked. I don't mind it, though, because it's really good practice for me to be playing with better players, against better players. I really like Team Builder . . . as long as I'm not queuing up for mid. Takes forever to find a time. But that's a different story.
