I agree. There are some scenarios that you may want to upgrade a certain ability faster than another but for the most part we know exactly which pattern we are upgrading our abilities.
Shuyin1781 votesThere are many champions that adjusts the abilities they level/start with based on the matchup. Having the game auto-level your spells would mess you up on leveling smart into how a matchup is going.

Shuyin1781 votesIt's a pointless thing to have for this game, and the only reason Smite has it is because players fully control their characters instead of it being just a click like League, making it more dangerous to level like League does because then you have to stop moving and what not in Smite.
