, as each of them don't really have unique mechanics or excel in one area at the sacrifice of another, they are versatile all rounders and never drop out of the top 2 tiers because they fit every meta and have no real hard counters

Irelia and Graves were not popular picks before massive nerfs to champions outclassing them. I guess you are not playing for a long time. There are always popular FOTM champions spammed in ranked
well, all of those champions (except graves) have one thing in common: they have (near)uncounterable power in their kit. irelia has a 7 sec stun on a 3 sec cooldown that cant be avoided. ahri is infinite mobility that is even more cancer than kassadin was 2 years ago and lee sin has both of that plus no resource cost and the strongest ultimate in the game. even tho irelia herself offers little to no "outplay potential", she also cant really be outplayed herself. the same thing applies to ahri and lee sin, aswell as many other champions that are very popular.
