PSA: Stop "counterpicking" champions you can't play
Seriously, if you cannot fucking play the champion you are picking to counter someone, if they are halfway decent you are still going to get smashed.
Pick who you are good with.

I'm gonna say "Depends how strong the counter is". The first time I had ever played against Irelia, I looked her up and brought Nasus. I'm not really good at him or tanks in general, I'm definitely an ADC main, but I countered her so hard she just couldn't do anything. She Qs for a minion, she gets smacked upside the head. She comes in on me, she gets withered and smacked upside the head. She was 10,000 times more useful once early game was over, but I can't stop my bot lane from feeding an underfed Irelia.

I'd argue that in most instances you'd be right, but if a Cho tries countering Malphite in top lane, he should win about 99% of the time. He's everything Malphite DOESN'T want to fight against.
